PITTSBURGH (AP)—The Pittsburgh Penguins’ march to the Stanley Cup finals has paid off for coach Michel Therrien.
General manager Ray Shero says the team has agreed to terms on a new three-year contract for Therrien.
Therrien had one year left on his contract. The new deal includes a raise for this season, and goes through the 2010-11 season, slated to be the team’s first in a planned $290 million arena.
Therrien was hired to replace Eddie Olczyk, fired 31 games into the 2005-06 season.
The Penguins missed the playoffs that season, but have earned berths in Therrien’s two full seasons with the team. In June, the Penguins lost the Cup final in six games to Detroit.
