 Can you truly legislate morality?

Our honorable NC government claims that a constitutional ban on Gay marriage is a moral issue.  Yet will it get us more morality?  What makes one moral issue worthy of changing our constitution and another moral issue such as adultery just the prevue of a person’s private life?

First let’s look at some other failed morality laws:

We have so called blue laws that prevent the sale of Alcohol before noon on Sundays.  Does that make the drunkard more moral from 12am Sunday to 12pm Sunday than he will be at 12:01pm?

We actually had laws against both adultery and living together at one time but now those are deemed quaint and out dated.  We don’t see a movement to make adultery and fornication banned under our constitution.  Why is that?

So where are these lawmakers getting their moral code?  Let’s play the odds and say it is from the Christian Bible.  So I guess it is fair to see what Jesus said on the subject.

Jesus on homosexuality.  [Crickets Chirping]

Jesus on divorce. Every one who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. Luke 16:18

Whoa!! Hold the phones!  If the morality that is driving the lawmakers to make law is the morality taught by Jesus then why is the first constitutional amendment not to make divorce illegal?

Oh.. You mean those are personal things between a man and God and don’t need laws like say making gay marriage illegal because that is so much worse than a man leaving his wife and kids destitute to run off with his mistress whom he can then legally marry.

Well I am sure Jesus would agree with that I mean look what he did here: John 8:1 - 11 scribes and Pharisees had caught a woman in the act of adultery (the woman commonly referred to as the prostitute) and told Jesus who was teaching in the temple that the Mosaic Law required she be stoned to death. Trying to make an opportunity of this to trick Jesus that they might accuse Him, they, with stones in hand, asked Jesus what He says about the Law. After Jesus tried to ignore their repeated questioning, He told them "He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." One by one each man dropped his stone and walked away.

Well, they were trying to trick him, but I am sure he would have come out in support of this righteous judgment against gay marriage.  I mean a public flogging is always good PR.  Let’s go to the videotape shall we..

Matt 7:2-5 "For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged , and with the measure you use, it will be measured to. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother's eye  and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, 'Let me take the speck out of your eye,' when all the time there is a plank in your own eye You hypocrite*, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye]." At Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan, Jesus was talking to the multitudes gathered there after hearing of His message and of His healings to beseech them to not become like the pharisees and hypocrites who think they are above sin.

Whoa!!  That sounds like a lot of hippie leftist mumbo jumbo right there..

Well lets go back to that really old time religion.. The Old testament!  I mean back then he destroyed Sodom.  He didn’t open an appletini  bar there, he destroyed it!  That is a pretty clear condemnation of what happens when you let gays start marrying am I right?

Ezekiel 16:49 "'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy.

WAIT WHAT!!!!  You mean in the Bible that God held an entire people accountable because they did not help the poor enough?  I thought charity was an individual thing…  I need to draft a telegram to Bachmann and Perry STAT!!!  They are endangering us all!

Yet we will make gay marriage illegal in our constitution.  For morality and in Jesus’ name.

Jesus who spoke literally thousands of times in the gospels on our responsibility to the poor and needy and helping our fellow man.

Jesus who told us to treat others like ourselves, to love our enemies and forgive an infinite number of times.

Jesus who said that it would be very hard (like a camel through the eye of a needle hard) for the wealthy to even make it to heaven.

Jesus who told people to sell all their possessions and give them to the poor and follow him.

Jesus who was derided by the religious leaders of his day for hanging out with the outcast, the sinners, the ones under the condemnation of society (and in the belief of the day, under condemnation of God himself).  It  was those leaders he took special time to give a tongue lashing too..

Jesus who so despised the commercialization of religion that he opened up a frosty can on the money changers in the temple and threw them out.

Jesus who said the last shall be first and the first shall be last.

Jesus who said that we will be forgiven as we forgive and judged as we have judged.

Forgive them father.. for they know not what they do.
