RALEIGH, N.C. — Hip-hop pioneers De La Soul will headline the first night of the 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival with a show in City Plaza, organizers announced Tuesday.

The show marks the first time in the festival's five year history that a headliner has performed on Thursday night in City Plaza. Shows there typically take place on Friday and Saturday nights during the festival.

De La Soul will be joined by Durham's Toon and the Real Laww.

Hopscotch Music Festival is Sept. 4-6 at various venues in downtown Raleigh.

Spoon, St. Vincent and Raleigh's Lonnie Walker will play City Plaza on Friday, Sept. 5. The following night Mastodon will be joined by Detroit punk pioneers Death and Chapel Hill's own Valient Thorr.

VIP and three-day passes for Hopscotch Music Festival are on sale now. In June, when the Hopscotch schedule is released, one-day passes will go on sale. Those will run $65-$85.

Individual tickets for City Plaza shows will also be available. They will be $40.
