Speeding, gunshot attract attention near University Mall

Police said Joanne Kay Hall, 50, was speeding and, when Chapel Hill police officer Drew Cabe attempted to pull her over, led them on a short pursuit that ended just before 3 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 15/501 and Manning Drive.

When Hall stopped, an officer approached her car only to have her back into him. The officer fired into Hall's tire to deflate it. She drove away again but did not get far.

"This incident highlights how quickly a seemingly routine encounter can turn into something possibly deadly," said Chapel Hill Police Chief Chris Blue. "I am glad that neither the officer nor Ms. Hall was harmed in this encounter."

Hall, of Meriwither Drive in Durham, is charged with speeding to elude arrest, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill on a governmental officer, hit and run, possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest, driving while license revoked, speeding, careless and reckless driving and failure to yield to blue lights/siren.

Hall, whose criminal history dates to the late 1980s and includes convictions for larceny, credit card theft and forgery, remained in the Orange County jail Monday under a $31,500 bond. Her first court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
