NEW HILL, N.C. — A special inspection team from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission began work Wednesday at the Shearon Harris nuclear plant in southwest Wake County.

Duker Energy, owner and operator of the plant, shut it down last week after the discovery of a quarter-inch crack in a reactor sensor.

NRC inspectors were expected to spend about a week determining how the crack developed, how the utility responded and whether there are lessons to be learned and applied at other nuclear plants.

They will issue a report in about 45 days.
