Southwest to start RDU-St. Louis flights

Posted October 21, 2009

— Southwest Airlines announced Wednesday that it would begin daily nonstop service between Raleigh-Durham International Airport and St. Louis next May.

The news comes on the heels of American Airlines’ decision to drop service between RDU and St. Louis next spring. American offers three daily departures to St. Louis, while Southwest will have one daily flight.

“We are very pleased that Southwest recognizes the vitality of RDU’s market and the demand that remains for service to St. Louis,” Teresa Damiano, RDU’s director of marketing, said in a statement.

More than 100,000 people travel between RDU and St. Louis each year, according to Damiano.

"Nonstop" means they fly there with no scheduled stops in between. "Direct" means that there might be a stop on the way (for example - a RDU to LAS "direct" flight might have an intermediate stop at BNA - Nashville).

Comedian in St. Louis several years ago: "Folks, I gotta tell ya, getting here was definitely an adventure. I called my travel agent and said Ma'am, I need to get to St. Louis in the worst possible way. The agent thought for a moment and finally she said "Hmmm. Worst possible way to St. Louis." Well, that would be TWA, sir. I'll have you on the next flight.
