ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A multi-sport athlete from SouthWest Edgecombe High School was shot early Sunday while he was driving Rocky Mount.
According to police, Quontellas Norwood, 17, was driving in the 1300 block of Leggett Road at about 1:45 a.m when someone in a passing car fired shots into his vehicle.

Norwood crashed, got out and went to a nearby house for help. He told the homeowner there that he had just dropped a friend off at a home nearby when the shots rang out.

The homeowner, who asked to be identified only as Frankie, said he heard the teen banging on his door. "Really hard, like boom, boom, boom. Really hard like someone is trying to bust the door down," he said.
A glance at his security camera showed neighbors rushing toward his house. Aaron Powell, who was sitting on a nearby porch, said he saw the shots being fired and ran to help. He recognized Norwood and encouraged Frankie to call 911.
When Frankie opened the door, he found a young man collapsed and bleeding on his doorstep. Norwood was begging for help.
"He said, 'I'm not a gang banger. I'm a good kid. I'm a football player. I'm an athlete," Frankie recalled.

By Monday morning, Norwood was listed in stable condition at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville and was expected to make a full recovery.

Norwood, a senior who plays both offense and defense for the Cougars football team, scored on a two-point conversion in SouthWest's 35-14 win Friday night over North Edgecombe. As a junior, he was named by The Wilson Times to its all-area basketball team.
