AMC Theatres is launching a monthly series of sensory friendly films for families affected by autism.

Southpoint 17 at The Streets at Southpoint in Durham is among the theaters across the country that will offer the series. It begins on Saturday with a screening of Epic 2D. Tickets are $6.50 for kids and adults. All movies start at 10 a.m.

During the screenings, the auditoriums will have the lights up and the sound turned down, according to AMC's website. Audience members are welcome to dance, walk, shout or sing.

The program started after a parent with a child with autism asked for a special screening at a theater in Maryland. That day, more than 300 people showed up.

Here's the schedule:

June 1: Epic 2D

June 29: Monsters University

July 13: Despicable Me 2

Aug. 10: The Smurfs 2

Oct. 5: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2

Dec. 7: Frozen 2D
