Southern Pines police investigate hit-and-run

— Southern Pines police responded to a hit-and-run Tuesday morning on U.S. Highway 15-501 involving a Whispering Pines woman.

Alexis Garner, 24, reportedly walked in front of a Mitsubishi car at 12:11 a.m. while trying to cross the road in front of a Lowes Home Improvement store, according to police.

The driver, Enrique Garcia Lopez, 20, was not charged.

Garner was transported by ambulance to the Memorial Park ballfield on Morganton Road and then airlifted to UNC Hospital’s trauma center in serious condition.

No further information on Garner’s status has been released.

    "The driver was not charged..."? I'm hearing more and more about drivers (of a certain demographic) being involved in hit and runs yet somehow avoiding being charged. Did I miss a meeting or something?
