Sony Pictures now offering 'clean versions' of some movies

Posted June 9

MOVIELAND — Sony Pictures recently made a surprise announcement with its “clean version” of some of its titles.

The production company will now offer some titles with an available “clean version” removing language, sex and violence. Sony made the announcement earlier this week by releasing a video explaining the service as well as a stand-alone website.

“Clean version movies bring your favorite action-packed blockbusters home with adapted versions appropriate for a wider audience," the website says. "Feel more comfortable sharing your favorite movies together.”

It’s an interesting move by the studio, but not really a shocking one. Most recently, VidAngel made a huge splash in the market gaining attention and popularity with audiences, as well as scrutiny from major studios like Disney who felt the content-editing company was stealing money from them.

In December, a judge ordered VidAngel to stop streaming films and the company has since focused on creating original content. Sony likely noticed the market for “clean versions” of its movies and decided to take advantage of it.

While some are excited about the announcement, others are vehemently opposed to it including actor and writer Seth Rogen. “Holy (expletive removed). Please don’t do this to our movies. Thanks,” Rogen tweeted from his official Twitter account.

Many actors, writers, directors and producers have been against edited versions of their films for years, so someone speaking out against the new offering is no real surprise.

As of now, Sony is only offering a "clean version" of a handful of its titles. You can now start streaming the "clean versions" of the following movies on iTunes, VUDU and FandangoNOW.
