RALEIGH, N.C. — State officials encouraged residents to stay off the roads Friday due to the winter weather, but not everyone listened.

Plenty of people who lived within walking distance of local businesses, that opened their doors to patrons, ventured out for a hot lunch.

Some snuggled up to a fire at The Station on Person Street.

Andrew Swanson cleared off his car this morning. He and a friend were in search of something to eat and were not deterred by the winter weather.

"I know we are Southerners, so there are a lot of people who don't know how to drive," he said. "So, they tell those people to stay off the roads, but we will be fine."

Others said they did not want to take a chance on the roads. They packed up their kids into a stroller and went out in search of a hot meal.
