Soldier charged with smuggling $1 million from Afghanistan

Posted September 26, 2012

— A Fort Bragg soldier has been charged with smuggling $1 million in cash back to the U.S. following a deployment to Afghanistan.

Federal authorities filed a criminal information last Friday against Tonya Long. Such filings usually indicate a plea agreement is being negotiated and that no grand jury indictment will be needed.

Long was a staff sergeant assigned to 189th Combat Sustainment Battalion, which was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group for a deployment to Afghanistan from January 2008 to April 2009. She served as transportation management coordinator and customs inspector, meaning that she was responsible for the movement of supplies in the war zone and items being shipped back to the U.S., according to court documents.

Prosecutors allege that Long hid the cash in a number of VCRs sent to the U.S. in January and February 2009. They are seeking forfeiture of any property Long purchased with the smuggled cash.

    WooHoo2You,

It's hard to believe you are a veteran if you do not keep up with military news or else you have have the actual answers/facts. With the gas prices, would you travel 2 hours to see a doctor that takes Tri Care? Take a stand and support those who fight for your comments on here, or at least stand in front of them.

    Worland,

-She's just protecting herself from Obama's budget cuts.

By smuggling 1 million dollars? Oh, and this is the first time the budget has gone UP when a war ended...but that is "cuting?!?"

    - Obama's slashed military healthcare benefits and plans to gut the military retirement system.

    How so?

    - Obama's already raised co-pays and premiums on military retirees too.

Again, how so? BTW, according to the GOP “we all have to make sacrifices.” I guess us vets don’t count when convenient?

-I guess that really doesn't matter since it's about impossible to find a doctor that accepts Tri-care insurance anyway.

"Obama's slashed military healthcare benefits and plans to gut the military retirement system." - Worland

    Obama slashed benefits?

Senator Lindsey Graham said, “It’s hard to ask those who’ve done the most to secure our freedom to give more, but I’m willing to do it,” noting that “if we don’t do something in terms of health care growth and entitlement retiree benefits, you’re going to compete the retired force with operational needs and that’s just not where we want to go.

Senator John McCain also supported similar cost-saving changes to TRICARE, noting that “national health care costs have risen significantly.”

Your man Romney's plan would be to privatize veterans’ benefits by “creating a voucher system.” Like the vouchers in Ryan's Medicare privatization plan. These vouchers which don't keep up with inflation will become WORTHLESS in a decade.

The money was probably some of what obama sends over there for them to buy equipment to attack us with.
