Solar eclipse leads to arrest of metro-Atlanta shooting suspect

Posted August 25

— Millions of people in the United States stepped outside to view the solar eclipse Monday, including at least one man who is probably wishing he had stayed home. Devonte Jamal Glivens, 24, of Conyers, was taken into custody after he stopped by City Hall see if the city was giving out free viewing glasses.

Glivens is one of three suspects wanted in connection with an Aug. 8 driveby shooting at the Briar Creek Apartments off Pine Log Road. According to an incident report from the Conyers Police Department, witnesses reported seeing a burgundy four-door passenger vehicle drive through the complex about 3 p.m. with three occupants inside. One of the occupants fired three gunshots toward one of the apartment buildings and then the vehicle drove away.

No one was injured in the shooting incident, and there was no report of damage to any of the buildings. Investigators searched the area near the building and found two .45 caliber shell casings.

The investigation led to Glivens and his brother, Tyrese Cecil D'Ontre Glivens, 18, also from Conyers, being identified as possible suspects in the shooting, and it was determined that Devonte Glivens owns a burgundy Impala matching the description of the vehicle. A persons of interest lookout was posted for the brothers.

On Monday, Conyers held a solar eclipse social watch party for employees on the front lawn of City Hall and handed out eclipse glasses. Conyers Police Sgt. Kim Lucas said they got more than just a solar eclipse at the party.

"We're standing there and the burgundy Impala pulls up to where we are," she said. "Devonte Glivens had just left paying a visit to his probation officer, and he pulled up and asked if we were giving away the glasses. We immediately recognized him as being Devonte Glivens in a burgundy Impala, along with a passenger."

Lucas said Glivens and the passenger, identified as Brandon James Cayo, 17, of Decatur, were escorted inside and interviewed. During the investigation, they discovered a firearm and a large amount of suspected marijuana in the Impala, and both men were arrested.

A warrant was also taken out on Tyrese Glivens, and he was arrested a day later.

Devonte Glivens has been charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, reckless conduct, and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute. Tyrese Glivens was charged with reckless conduct. Cayo was determined not to be involved with the shooting incident, but was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

The investigation into the shooting incident is continuing.
