The Chabad of Cary Learning Center will host an evening of fun to celebrate Hanukkah this Thursday in downtown Apex.

This is the first time the town will feature a public celebration of the annual festival of lights, which started Saturday night. The event begins at 6 p.m., Thursday, at 220 N. Salem St., with the lighting of the nine-foot menorah. Members of Apex's Town Council will help with the lighting.

It's followed by music, including the singing of traditional songs such as "Rock of Ages" and "The Dreidel Song" led by the Chabad Hebrew School Choir, and traditional treats - hot potato latkes and donuts. There will be a snow play area for the kids to have fun in.

Before the event, a special Hanukkah program for children with special needs and their families is set for 4:45 p.m. to 6:10 p.m., Thursday, at the Halle Cultural Arts Center. The event includes a Hanukkah puppet show by master puppeteer Arthurana Gabrielli, crafts, food and a Jewish Music Circle led by music therapist Robin Jacobs.

"It is a holiday that enriches our lives with the light of tradition," said Rabbi Yisroel Cotlar, director of the Chabad Learning Center, in a press release. "In ancient times our ancestors rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem with the menorah. Today, we rededicate ourselves to making this world a better and brighter place."

The menorah in Apex also will be lit the other nights of Hanukkah. It's 6 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; 3:30 p.m., Friday; and 8 p.m., Saturday.
