Smoke billows in air for several hours after fire at Wake County landfill
A large fire burned at the Shotwell Landfill in Wendell on Smithfield Road Saturday afternoon.

KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A large fire burned at the Shotwell Landfill in Wendell on Smithfield Road off Bissette Road on Saturday afternoon.
Huge clouds of smoke can been seen rising to the sky in photos posted by officials.
Anyone in the area should be aware there will be "a large presence of smoke" for the next couple of hours, the Knightdale Fire Department said on Facebook.
People who have trouble breathing should stay inside until the smoke has cleared, officials said.
