SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Police said Friday that they have arrested a Smithfield man in connection with the sexual assault of a 16-year-old mentally handicapped girl last spring.

Alphonso Ellis Kirkwood Jr., 19, of Rand Street, was arrested Wednesday on Broadway Street and charged with second-degree rape.

The girl wandered away from adult supervision on March 28 while visiting a relative in Smithfield, police said. Investigators said she might have been sexually assaulted by others at various locations, and more arrests are possible.

Kirkwood also was charged with three counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling in connection with an April 14 shooting on East Parker St.

He was being held in the Johnston County jail under a $160,000 bond.
