Smartphone meets science for backyard firefly count

Posted May 31, 2013

Clemson University's annual firefly count is Saturday night, and you can help.

Researchers are asking people to count the number of flashes they see in a minute, sometime between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. The information will help scientists in their quest to figure out why the insects are disappearing.

“You can just go to any location and then write down the number for one minute,” biogeochemist Alex Chow said. You can either submit your findings on Clemson’s website or by downloading a special Apple app.

Lots of people coat their laws with roundup, and that is destroying our environment. Please plant some native N.C. flowers and buy only organic foods.
