One killed in plane crash near Bahama

The plane went down in a heavily wooded area off Archery Range Road near Lake Michie at about 12:25 p.m.

Troy Kafka said he and his mother were sitting on their back porch when they saw the plane go down.

"It wasn't really cutting out, but you could tell something was wrong because it was going fast, really fast," Kafka said of the plane's engine.

John Infinger said he could hear the plane before it went down.

"I thought to myself, 'That's weird. You don't ever hear small planes around here," Infinger said. "I never looked up to see what it was, but I could hear him pretty good. I guess he was pretty low."

Bahama Fire Department Deputy Chief Charles Sanford said two people were aboard the plane. There was no word on the condition of the second person, who was taken to a nearby hospital.

The wreckage was found in an area that used to be a city park, Sanford said.

Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the Beechcraft Travel Air 95 took off from Lake Ridge Aero Park, a grass runway on the banks of Falls Lake, shortly after 11:30 a.m.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
