Sleeping sitter charged after Dunn children wander off

Posted August 6, 2015

Brittani Lynette Brooks

— A babysitter was charged with misdemeanor child abuse after two young children wandered out of their home and across a busy road in Dunn, police said.

The 6-year-old and 3-year-old were found near a gas station at the intersection of U.S. Highway 421 and Erwin Road on Tuesday afternoon. Police took them back to a house on Erwin Road, where they had to repeatedly ring the bell, pound on the front door and shout to get the attention of the babysitter inside.

Brittani Lynette Brooks, 25, of Spring Lake, was sleeping in the house when the children left, police said. She was taken to the Harnett County jail and given a $10,000 secured bond.

When I was a kid of about 3, I went wandering down the road a mile or so. Thank God that people in that day had better sense than to arrest and charge my mother with abuse.

Seriously, you physically can't watch children every single minute. I don't know why she was sleeping, but if she just passed out from exhaustion, that is not unusual for the human species or any other animal.

    Let her go.

Do you know what fixed my behavior? I got whipped. At 6 years old, I'll say that kid should have known better and needs to be whipped, too.

If you got to see it on the news...part of her shirt said today is not your day. it really wasn't her day.

Goodness sakes. You as the babysitter is responsible for the well being of the children you were left in charge with. They could have been killed crossing that busy road. What in the world is more important than the safety of a child? I hope you are ashamed of yourself and I seriously hope you are never entrusted with any childcare ever again and I strongly hope your name is circulated so that you can't! Glad they weren't my kids, because your $10,000 fine and charges brought against you would have been the least of your worries. Hope the book is thrown at you and your abilities ruined. SMH!

I'd like to thank the citizen who saw the kids and did something about it.
