Skateboarders damage Raleigh police memorial
Two months after a memorial was dedicated to Raleigh police officers who died in the line of duty, city officials said Monday that skateboarders have damaged the downtown monument.
Posted — Updated“There already is damage that has occurred both to the plaza steps and the water table itself,” Thomas Sayre, the memorial’s creator, said in a statement. “There is increasing chipping of concrete, deposits of various materials from the undersides of the skateboards as well as a black wax, which apparently is used as a lubricant.”
A "No Skateboarding" sign is posted next to the memorial, which sits at the entrance to the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, at 222 W. Hargett St.
“It is a shame that this place of honor and sacrifice is being used as a playground,” retired Raleigh Police Maj. Dennis Lane, president of the Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation, said in a statement. “We worked for five years to raise the funds to honor these Raleigh officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. I never thought it would not be respected by the public.”
