RALEIGH, N.C. — Two months after a memorial was dedicated to Raleigh police officers who died in the line of duty, city officials said Monday that skateboarders have damaged the downtown monument.

“There already is damage that has occurred both to the plaza steps and the water table itself,” Thomas Sayre, the memorial’s creator, said in a statement. “There is increasing chipping of concrete, deposits of various materials from the undersides of the skateboards as well as a black wax, which apparently is used as a lubricant.”

A "No Skateboarding" sign is posted next to the memorial, which sits at the entrance to the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex, at 222 W. Hargett St.

“It is a shame that this place of honor and sacrifice is being used as a playground,” retired Raleigh Police Maj. Dennis Lane, president of the Raleigh Police Memorial Foundation, said in a statement. “We worked for five years to raise the funds to honor these Raleigh officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. I never thought it would not be respected by the public.”
