RALEIGH, N.C. — Temperatures will start to warm up Friday afternoon, a preview of a major heat headed toward central and eastern North Carolina for the weekend.

"The good thing about today is that we won't see unbearable humidity in the afternoon, but it's coming," WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said. "That said, enjoy today's highs in the upper 80s and sunshine. It will be quite beautiful."

A warm front will push through the Triangle overnight, essentially opening the door for much warmer air to move from the Mississippi Valley into the Carolinas.

Overnight lows will stay in the upper 60s to near 70 degrees, and thanks to bright sunshine, temperatures will climb quickly Saturday morning.

"If you're headed to the Susan G. Komen Triangle Race for the Cure, be sure to drink plenty of water and grab the sunscreen," Gardner said. "Temperatures will be in the low 70s for the first race start time at 7:30 a.m., and they will climb quickly."

Temperatures will be near 90 degrees by lunchtime and top out Saturday afternoon in the mid-90s.

On Sunday, it will be even warmer, with highs in the upper 90s. The record high at Raleigh-Durham International Airport for June 12 is 98 degrees.

"We could flirt with record heat as we close out the weekend," Gardner said. "We'll definitely be a good 10 degrees above normal, so be prepared for pretty big changes from what we've seen this week."

Scattered showers and storms are possible both Saturday and Sunday afternoon, but the chances are low and stay at about 20 to 30 percent both days.
