Sisters charged with embezzling from insurance agency

Agents with the state Department of Insurance arrested two Durham women Thursday on charges that they stole money from the insurance agency where they worked.

DURHAM, N.C. — Agents with the state Department of Insurance arrested two Durham women Thursday on charges that they stole money from the insurance agency where they worked.

Evelyn Lee Navarro, 31, of 7205 Russell Road, Apt. D, was charged with one count of embezzlement by an insurance agent. Her sister, Sophia Georgette Navarro, 25, of 511 Goodwin Road, was charged with one count of embezzlement.

DOI investigators allege that Evelyn Navarro, stole $10,274 between July 2007 and June 2009 while working as a licensed insurance agent for Protective Agency Inc.

Investigators claim Sophia Navarro, who was also an employee at the insurance agency, embezzled $8,603 between October 2008 and June 2009.

Protective Agency has compensated any customer policies that were affected in the scheme, DOI officials said.
