PITTSBORO, N.C. — Chatham County authorities have closed two roads since Monday because sinkholes have damaged the pavement.

A sinkhole opened Monday on a portion of Lystra Road that crosses Jordan Lake and that has been flooded recently.

On Tuesday, a sinkhole cracked the pavement on Jones Ferry Road, forcing authorities to close it between River Road and Lamont Norwood Road.

North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are determining the best way to repair the damage and whether an outside contractor will be hired to handle the job, officials said.

There was no word on when the roads would be repaired and reopened.
