RALEIGH, N.C. — The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons canceled a Silver Alert Friday evening after a missing woman who disappeared from a Wake County assisted living center was found safe.

The alert was issued Friday morning for Annie McKey, 81, who suffers from a cognitive impairment.

She disappeared from James Rest Home Assisted Living, at 8420 James Rest Home Road in New Hill and was last seen around 12:45 p.m. Friday in Charlotte with her son.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
