Wilson police called off their search Wednesday for a 52-year-old man who went missing from a home on Garner Street.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons canceled a Silver Alert for Donald Earl Bowers about 12:45 a.m., two hours after it had been issued.

No other details were immediately available.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered people who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.

It's because he never was really missing. It means someone was just too lazy to get up off the couch and look outside. The alert system is a joke. Find him in jail? The mug shot might suggest that. Next time, try there first.
