SMITHFIELD, N.C. — Authorities issued a Silver Alert Thursday morning for a missing Smithfield man.

Police believe Lenberg Underwood Jr., 28, is endangered. He suffers from dementia or another cognitive impairment.

Underwood was last seen at 600 Brightleaf Blvd. in Smithfield and was traveling by Greyhound bus to Fayetteville. The bus went through Raleigh.

He was wearing black jeans, a gray T-shirt with black trim around the sleeves and white tennis shoes.

Officers described Underwood as a black man, standing 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing 160 pounds. He has short, black hair and brown eyes.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system notifies the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
