<b>GARLAND, N.C.</b> — The Sampson County Sheriff's Office canceled its search Thursday for a missing 70-year-old man who is believed to be cognitively impaired. 

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert for William Earl Powell, who was last seen walking his dog in Garland, around 4:30 p.m. It was canceled less than six hours later.

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton Middle School athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
