RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police were searching for an 83-year-old woman with a cognitive impairment Tuesday night.

The North Carolina Center for Missing Persons issued a Silver Alert for Rachel Gurley Martin shortly after 11 p.m. She was last seen near Glascock Street and Raleigh Boulevard and may be headed to 3709 National Drive, authorities said.

Martin is white with short, white hair and hazel eyes. She is about 5 feet 2 inches tall and 140 pounds. She was last seen wearing a navy shirt with red trim and navy pants.

Anyone with information on Martin's whereabouts is asked to call Raleigh police at 919-829-1911.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
