Silver Alert canceled; Halifax County man found dead

Posted June 5, 2008

— A silver alert was canceled Thursday afternoon for a missing Halifax County man after his body was found.

Larry Junior Powell was reported missing Wednesday after he was last seen riding a black bike on Denton Road in Enfield.

His body was discovered at 3:02 p.m. in a ditch along the Dennis Street extension, just outside Enfield. His cause of death was not immediately released.

Developed in 2007, the Silver Alert system quickly notifies the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.

oops, didn't realize someone else signed in when I sat down at computer and wrote the message from wonderif. should have checked-sometimes sharing not so great! My bad

Since people still reading this let me try to explain what I meant.
When I initially read the headline it struck me as an unfeeling and sensationalism aimed way to report it. I felt and still do that the headline should have been more gentle w/ the fact that he was found dead stated in the article not the headline, purely for the family's sake. Maybe it should have read something like "Silver Alert canceled for missing Halifax co. man"

So sorry for this poor man and his family. I know that today your sorrow runs deep but lean on your faith. I am so sorry for your loss.

Confusion here scubagirl. What are you talking about?

  • Scubagirl Jun 6, 2008

What I meant is the headline should have read something like,
Silver alert for Halifax man cancelled. then in body of article state reason. The headline as it's written just seems a little crass. Maybe it's just me but .....
yes, it is good they found him I just think newspeople are always more about sensationalism than consideration for families

Isn't there a better word than "canceled" when the search has been completed

  • MadBiker Jun 6, 2008

I get what your're saying, scubagirl. At least they found him!!

  • carolinahome Jun 6, 2008

scubagirl..... what in the world are you talking about???

  • Scubagirl Jun 5, 2008

What a crass and horrible headline! Wasn't there a better, easier on the family, way to say that? Or is sensationalism what matters more than compassion?

    Prayers for the family.
