RALEIGH, N.C. — A Silver Alert for a 15-year-old Wendell boy who went missing more than a week was canceled Sunday.

The alert for Miguel Gutierrez, was issued April 5 and canceled shortly before 5 p.m.

Authorities said Gutierrez was found safe but provided no other details.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered people who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
