DURHAM, N.C. — The Silver Alert for a 39-year-old Durham woman who is cognitively impaired has been canceled, authorities said Wednesday.

Leslie Michelle Jones went missing from an assisted living facility on North Mangum Street on Tuesday. The reason for canceling the alert was not released and it wasn't clear whether Jones had returned to Mangum Street Family Care safely.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.
