— The Chapel Hill Police Department has ended its search Thursday for a 47 -year-old woman who is believe to be cognitively impaired.

A Silver Alert was issued for Janie McKinney, who was last seen on New Stateside Drive, around 3 a.m. It was canceled just after 7 a.m.

It wasn't clear why the alert was canceled or whether McKinney was found safe.

Developed in 2007, Silver Alert is a system to quickly notify the public about missing endangered adults who suffer from dementia or other cognitive impairments, such as Alzheimer's disease.

It also allows caregivers and nursing homes to report a person missing. In the past, only a family member could report an adult missing.

They issue it like many other alerts and things to show people that they use it and the money involved in it is being used.

The silver alrets never offer a picture...that would be helpful when looking for someone.

I always wonder when the alert gets cancelled whether they just decided someone wasn't worth looking for that long or if they were found safely. Hopefully, all well with this young lady.
