RALEIGH, N.C. — A day after a winter storm hit central and eastern North Carolina, many secondary roads were still covered with snow and ice on Friday.
The slick roads were a main reason a number of school districts canceled classes Friday.

The State Highway Patrol has responded to more than 2,000 calls for service, including nearly 1,300 collisions, in the central and eastern parts of the state since late Wednesday.

Steve Abbott, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said DOT crews should have all secondary roads across the region cleared by Saturday.

Snow melted on patches of roads in the sun, but snow usually remained wherever trees shaded the roadway.

DOT doesn't plow every road, Abbott said, noting that roads in private communities and apartment complexes aren't state roads, so clearing them is the responsibility of the homeowners association or the property owner.
