ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. — A Rocky Mount teen was found dead in his car, which had struck a brick wall, Wednesday night after officers responded to calls about gunshots on Lee Street, police said.

Police said Shakeem Devonte Avent, 18, was driving a burgundy Cadillac when he collided with a white BMW and then struck a brick wall at the corner of Sunset Avenue and Lee Street around 7:40 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial investigation revealed that Avent had been shot, but investigators are waiting for an autopsy to determine the cause of death, police said.

Police said they received calls about the wreck at the same time as calls about shots being fired in the area. They are treating the case as a homicide.

The driver of the BMW, whose name was not released, was not injured.
