Shooting victim driven to hospital, dies

A Raeford man was dropped off at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center Sunday evening, and he died in the emergency room of a gunshot wound, police said.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — Police on Monday were investigating the death of a man who was dropped off Sunday night at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Shamont Antwain McRae, 22, of Singleton Road in Raeford, was dropped off at the hospital at about 7:30 p.m. Sunday, and he died in the emergency room of a gunshot wound, police said.

Police said friends drove McRae to the hospital, and investigators located them late Sunday and have interviewed them.

The shooting occurred near Friar Avenue off Hope Mills Road, which is about two miles from the hospital, police said.

Investigators are treating the case as a homicide, but no details regarding a motive or possible suspects were released.
