One killed, one injured in parking lot shooting at Raleigh Walmart

Officers responding to 10050 Glenwood Ave. at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday found Jerry Eugene Sumpter and Emil Emit Sherwood, both of Durham, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both men were taken to Duke University Hospital, where 39-year-old Sumpter died. Authorities said Sherwood's injuries are not life-threatening.

Detectives have not established a motive for the incident but said Friday that they do not believe it was a random act. Police said that the suspects left the scene in a white Dodge Charger and a silver Honda Accord.

A man who called 911 said that one of the victims had been shot in the back.

"I heard gunshots at the back of the building. There were a couple of cars that sped off," said the caller.

A large section of the parking lot was blocked off overnight and early Friday as investigators looked for evidence. The bulk of the parking lot was reopened by 10:30 a.m., but three damaged cars were still in the parking lot.

It's unclear how the cars were damaged.

Many Walmart customers remained curious and unsettled about the incident on Friday afternoon.

"It's supposed to be a nice place to come around shopping and you see all these cars that got banged up," said customer Niki Clark.

"I'm surprised," said customer Barbara Darbee. "I come here all the time, everyone is very nice."

Brier Creek business owner Ryan Steward isn't surprised, however. After a body was found in Walmart's parking lot earlier this year, he's become disillusioned with the location of his cell phone repair shop.

"I don't like to see or hear of anybody being shot and killed, especially so close to the business," said Steward.

Steward wants to stay in the Brier Creek shopping center but has plans to cross over to the other side of Glenwood Ave.

"I think it's generally pretty safe," said Steward. "I think I'd go to the other side, away from Walmart."
