ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Police Chief Andy Jackson said Thursday that Roanoke Rapids police don't have any suspects and are continuing to investigate a shooting Wednesday afternoon that left one man dead and another in critical condition.

Police were called to 1903 Gordon Drive at about 4 p.m. where they found the men in a car.

Wilton Lee Shawn Cotton, 22, of 161 Pine Lane in Garysburg, was dead, and the second man, also 22, was taken to Halifax Regional Medical Center, Jackson said.

In an update Thursday morning, Jackson said the wounded man, whose name hasn't been released, had been moved to an undisclosed location.

Jackson noted that neither man was from Roanoke Rapids.

Neighbors said they've noticed an increase in "riff-raff" over the last month and are concerned that the shooting happened in broad daylight.

Police are also concerned over recent activity in the area.

"Relatively, we have a good community," Jackson said. "We don't see a lot of bad crime, and this is very unusual this time of the day."
