Shiawassee County launches 'Wear One' free condom campaign

Posted August 4

— The Shiawassee County Health Department is putting residents' health first by giving away free bags of condoms at various businesses.

It's part of a bigger effort to help reduce the number of STD cases seen across the county.

Ottawa County ran the same program and it was a big success.

"Protection is a positive way that you can prevent long term implications of STD's and unplanned pregnancies - and so condoms are something that are inexpensive, effective, and it can really protect you in a positive manner," said Shiawassee County Health Department's Nicole Greenway.

Many different businesses across the county have stepped up and are offering the free bags to customers.

Danette Webb owns The Village Hair Shoppe and Spa in Vernon and is one of the businesses that has the condoms available. The matter hits closer to home for her - as she herself was a teen mom.

"It changes your life. You miss out on a lot of stuff. I don't think they realize that. I obviously came a long way since then, but a lot don't. Your child is everything to you and you sacrifice your life for them - and at 16 - that's a long time just to give everything to your child," she said.

Recent health statistics show STDs are on the rise across the country with Gonorrhea and Chlamydia being the most prevalent.

"It's a real problem. We gotta face it, it's a real problem and it's only going to get worse. But, hey, if Shiawassee County can copy what Ottawa County did, we're all about it," said Jumbo's Bar owner Todd Sydow.

Each bag contains about 10 condoms as well as informational resources about STDs.

They can be picked up at the following locations in the county:

1. Shiawassee County Health Department

2. Bombshell Ink

3. Recovery Pathways

4. Great Lakes Bay Health Center -Shiawassee

5. Safe Center

6. D-Railed Bar & Grill
