— The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is seeking public assistance in identifying a man who robbed a Chapel Hill State Employee’s Credit Union on Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said that the Sheriff’s Office received a distress alarm from the facility on North Chatham Parkway just after 3 p.m. Shortly after, an employee called 911 to report the robbery and provide a description of the suspect.

The man attempted to conceal his face with a white T-shirt and sunglasses. He was wearing a New York Yankees hat with a striped gray hoodie, gray T-shirt, black gloves, jeans and athletic shoes.

Authorities said they did not know if the man, who approached the teller with a note demanding money, was armed. Initial reports indicated that the man left with $1,700, deputies said.

An SECU employee said the man was dropped off by a small, gray SUV, left on foot, and may have been picked up by the SUV. Authorities were searching for the vehicle Wednesday afternoon.

Anybody with information is asked to call the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office at 919-542-2911.
