Shelby man charged with drowning 2-year-old

Posted August 14, 2009

— Shelby police charged a 20-year-old man with murder after the 2-year-old girl he was taking care of drowned in a bathtub Wednesday.

The girl was unresponsive when officers were called out to 1526 Eaves Road, Apartment K-1, around 9 p.m., Chief Jeff Ledford said. She was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Ledford said it was initially reported that the girl was taking a bath and later found unresponsive by her caregiver, Wesley Paul Canipe, of 110 Knob Creek Drive in Lawndale. However, investigators determined that Canipe drowned the girl.

Canipe was charged with murder and intentional child abuse. He was being held in the Cleveland County Jail Friday without bond.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the girl's death continues, Ledford said.

kwazimac - "Dont bother addressing the "Professor" waste of time...defending a child murderer and saying he deserves protection in prison"

    Stop the spin!!!

That's not what the professor said at all. The professor merely shared facts, whether we like to hear them or not.

    Wake up folks!!!

Nowadays criminals bond together in prison with like-minded criminals who have committed similar crimes.

They kill each other for chocolate or cigarettes or disrespect shown, not because of who someone hurt or killed.

    Not any more.

    God bless.

crustyhalo - "...to the inmates...they'll take care of him."

    Dream on.

Some of you watch too much tv.

    God bless.

Groovy - "Why do so-called mothers insist on leaving their children with just anyone???"

SOMETIMES they have little choice. They're out there trying to earn enough to keep food in their child's mouth and a roof over their heads, and can't afford registered child care.

    God bless.

"Put him in Central Prison and let the inmates there hold him down....I'm sure he wouldn't like that."

We like to think that, but the truth is, often in prison those with same-type crimes, including child abuse and murder, etc., bond together thus protecting one another.

    God bless.

You have made the best statement about the police leaving out details. Yes they have and for a good reason, this is not the courthouse. We do not need to know what happened. Our lives will continue. The media and public need less information so it can be handled properly in court. And on a side note this is another example why we need the Death Penalty and to be administered quickly.
