Shaw University begins search for new president

Shaw University announced Friday it has formed a search committee to find a new leader following the retirement of President Dorothy Cowser Yancy.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Shaw University announced Friday it has formed a search committee to find a new leader following the retirement of President Dorothy Cowser Yancy.

Yancy was appointed in August 2011 to fill the post after former President Irma McClaurin resigned, and she committed to leading the university for a year or two.

Yancy served as interim president for 15 months prior to McClaurin and was credited with restructuring the school’s finances during that time.

“While there is always more to do, I am proud of what has been accomplished during my tenure at Shaw,” Yancy said in a statement. “It has been a pleasure to serve this great university, and I am confident that our students, faculty, staff, alumni and Board of Trustees will continue Shaw’s historic legacy of academic excellence and civic engagement.”

The university did not give a date for Yancy’s departure.

David C. Forbes, a member of the Board of Trustees, is chairman of the 22-member search committee, which met for the first time Friday to assign duties.

“I take the responsibility as chair of this committee very seriously, and I am certain each member of the search committee feels the same,” Forbes said in a statement. “We will do our best to find the most qualified and best-suited visionary leader to become the 17th president of this great university.”
