There is so much more going on in the world without adding one more item. The statues are a part of history. History is not pretty but we can learn from it. They didn't tear down the torture camps in Germany. They cleaned them up and created dialogue about what happened so it doesn't get repeated. These statues and monuments are handmade. Just like what happened during the civil war. All man made. Don't tear down history. Learn from it and once we educate ourselves we can educate our children. Behaving like what we all hate is not how you get things done. Step back and try and see it from a different view. What's next? Let's all drive to Stone Mountain and blow it up. America is in the crossroads of a very dangerous time. Do we really want to put so much energy into an object that really doesn't represent the majority. If the statue goes, it goes but don't act like animals in Durham. Have respect for others, yourself and diversity. Let's be the lightening rod

So you admit they were put up to further racial oppression and should be taken down?

Also, way to ignore demographics in voting on the Civil Rights Act. It was more a North v. South thing, than Democrats v. Republicans, but still more Democrats voted for it than Republicans (https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/aug/28/republicans-party-of-civil-rights). In fact, ZERO southern republicans voted for the Civil Rights Act. It also ignores how such racists as Strom Thurmond (who tried to filibuster the CRA) jumped ship and joined the Republican party because they realized it suited their message better.

You seriously do need to grab a history book--pray tell precisley who was responsible for setting up these hated statues? Democrats. Who used them to perpetuate racial oppression? Whose ancestors are memorialized through these statues --Democrats. So now, precisely who are you calling a white supremacist? Just for your future reference--I am one half Native American. You would be well served to engage you brain before putting you mouth in gear. Just might save you some embarrassing moments.

To call our President a Hitler and to call white people that support him racist is not only childish but somewhat an uneducated remark. So what grade did you drop out? It's ok to admit that you're uneducated. A lot of people are. It's just that some are more ill-advised than others.

There we go... you said it not me. GRAB A HISTORY BOOK... these statues are meaningless to history. They were set up for oppression nothing more. Also, how can you be anti-fascist and do as the Nazi party does... regardless if the Nazis took down statues, that isnt the defining representation of the party. We took down King George's III statue when we won independence... I still know who was king when it happened regardless of the statue not being there. People take down statues of their oppressors all the time... this is no different from the view of many young Americans who do not want these people commemorated.

This is the result of unchecked, anti-American, anti-white radical liberalism being pushed 24 x 7 x 365 in our public education system.

This HAS to be stopped, and it will, be it by force if necessary.

    This is 100% fascism.

These people HATE conservatives, white people, successful people, the religious, ANYONE that doesn't support their twisted agenda. And because LEO typically does nothing to deal with them, they have become emboldened o do whatever they want.
THEY are the dividers in this country. Imagine getting jumped or harassed walking down Hillsborough street simply for wearing a Trump hat or T-shirt,

This liberal HATE has to be dealt with now, because next they will be coming for churches and synagogues.

It's kind of a lot easier to protect a statue that's very big and stays in one spot! You people are such babies, stop making such a big deal over a statue and trying to erase a piece of our States history!

    I dont think you know what Fascism is... here is the definition;

    Definition of fascism

1often capitalized :  a political philosophy, movement, or regime (such as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition

2:  a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial controlearly instances of army fascismand brutality — J. W. Aldridge

3-dHilarious? Pathetic I would call it--the democrats brushing aside their history of slavery and repression and trying to present themselves as the savior of the people. Democrats and their followers have ignored the statues, monuments and legacy they have built until now. Surely they are not afflicted enough to think that everyone else will ignore that factual history as well.

If the students really feel this way then protest by boycotting going there. Transfer to another school. No one would care.

You know whats hilarious about this argument... the Democrats have obviously learned from their mistakes in the past, (100 years ago) which is why they denounce these disgraceful statues now. Everybody wants to talk about learning from history... odd that we get flake for learning from history and mistakes and thats all you people blast off about... #Ironic

How is the removal of this or any other statue going to alter anything, or change anyone's life? Being offended by something is a personal choice. Just choose not to be. The Democratic Party is using these statues as a prop to further divide our country. That's what should be being protested.

  • Phillip Mozingo Aug 23, 7:41 a.m.

Keep protesting and calling for the destruction of our statues and you may find yourselves in a civil war. History will repeat itself. I think armed citizens should protect these statues at all costs. Our Governor needs to resign. He's about worthless and sides with the protestors on everything. He's a threat to our state and to our citizens. He needs to be gone! We know he cheated to get in office anyhow. Explain how Republicans swept the country in the polls and one sorry democrat get elected in NC. #cheater #needstogo

So the more than 258,000 southern men who died (and the number is probably low) should receive no recognition? Even though they were drafted? That doesn't seem right either IMO. Pretty sure my great great grandfather didn't want to get killed and leave his wife and four children in extreme poverty.

The Silent Sam statue represents a era in American history when there was extreme poverty in the Southern States. If these spoiled and pampered kids had to live without electricity for one month you would see panic on a scale never before seen in human history and their attitude would change. The Southern States population (29% of the total US population in 1861 ) was being oppressed by a President that hated them - Black & White. Do your own research.

An earlier article mentioned fliers announcing the protest at 7pm and this article calls the protest a rumor? So who organized the protest, i.e. printed and distributed fliers? Who started the rumor? "Folt and the administration continue to prioritize wealthy alumni over students of color." Huh? Assumptive much?

How many people paid any attention to the statue until someone made an issue out of it? Is it really about the statue? Moving the statue is not going to change the economic status of anyone nor change anyone's mind, actually tends to harden opinions. Focusing on the statues is a diversion from the main issues that need to be resolved. A lot of wasted time and energy - full of sound and fury - but doesn't fix anything.
