Another lie from a left wing democrat. Republicans try to elect competent, intelligent people who can do the job. Skin color isn't an issue, and there are many conservative women in the republican party. Democrats who call conservative black people names like
"Uncle Tom" and "Aunt Jemima" are the real racists in this country.
goldenosprey Jul 8, 9:55 a.m.
Yeah, because republicans usually vote AGAINST people based on race or gender.
unaffiliated69 Jul 8, 9:23 a.m.
What about blacks? How do the numbers stack up there? And, why don't you mention that the black representation has gone UP now that the Republicans have taken over. For this, Barber's NC NAACP has sued because this is....(drum roll please though you know what's coming)....racist!
foolmeonce Jul 8, 7:53 a.m.
What kind of ignorant person would vote for anyone based on race or gender? Wait for it, wait for it--the democrats.
AliceBToklas Jul 7, 4:58 p.m.
I hope you do understand there is a difference. Nobody is saying there should be a quota but pointing out the discrepancy between the population and representatives is informative and educational. It helps to put many laws into perspective.
goldenosprey Jul 7, 3:37 p.m.
Doubt it. Those dominating the GA now are not qualified to run a lawn mower, let alone a state.
The reason for the gap is quite simple: gerrymandering.
Since the districts are drawn in a way that artificially inflates republican representation compared to actual votes, those elected as republican acolytes i.e. 60+ year old white men with connections to powerful corporate interests, are what you get. While I don't wish death on anyone, I recognize statistics and demographics reveal it is darkest for working families in NC right now. Before the dawn. Sun is scheduled to rise after the next census.
zonk Jul 7, 3:33 p.m.
This was just a weird story from beginning to end. There are also not many women and Latinos in the NFL.
jeffjohnson123 Jul 7, 2:35 p.m.
So many responses to the 'birth-right citizenship' remark. Looks like that struck a note of fear in the Latino support community. Good, let's make that the foundation for any argument on immigration reform.
Boogalooboy Jul 7, 2:06 p.m.
Boo hoo.... line up with credible qualifications and maybe, just maybe you will be voted in... i'm afraid this could lean towards the "everyone gets a trophy" syndrome.... I'm sure there are females and latinos out there who would represent the people more than the ones we have now...
conservativecop94 Jul 7, 1:58 p.m.
few women, latinos in nascar, the fire and police departments, hot air ballons, etc.
carrboroyouth Jul 7, 1:55 p.m.
I'm one of those kids, not working at McDonalds, success with a college degree. You need to get out more and realize that young people have a lot to offer this world. I wouldn't wish death on anyone, but it is true that general societal trends are becoming more accepting with every year that passes.
krimson Jul 7, 1:53 p.m.
So you would take away citizenship even from your own children, just to keep the "Latino" population in check???
carrboroyouth Jul 7, 1:52 p.m.
johnrmccray Jul 7, 1:39 p.m.
Why stop there? Go back to great-great-grandparents! Aristocracy for all!
Billy the Kid Jul 7, 1:26 p.m.
Mine came through the legal process of becoming citizens via Ellis Island, so that won't work. Any more ideas?
NiceNSmooth Jul 7, 1:01 p.m.
Agreed but lets do it right!!! lets back date it to your parents/grandparents!!
wayneboyd Jul 7, 12:52 p.m.
Look back at history and how well North Carolina fared when there were none in there.
juliomercado Jul 7, 12:12 p.m.
This is a nonstory at best. If women wish to run they can run, they choose not to. If latinos wish to run they can run, they choose not to. When did it become fashionable to stack the deck by race or gender rather than allowing for an even playing field?
Jump1 Jul 7, 11:55 a.m.
That's it fill a a slot with individuals that are not qualified to do the job, but this is the problem already.
How about the real reason there is so few... they do not wish to run for the position...? You can make a law that says you have to have a least 50 % of the legislative be female and 50% of that has to be Latinos female.
50s Child Jul 7, 11:12 a.m.
The same inclusive and tolerant children who can't spell properly because SpellCheck does that, can't add and subtract because the McD's cash register does that, and are "struggling" with college debt that in their wisdom, they freely took on even though there are no jobs? Oh, but they're "inclusive" (whatever that means) and "tolerant" (as long as they get trophies for showing up).
Or will they be like you, gloating "tolerantly" and rubbing their hands together "inclusively" at the thought of someone's death?
computer trainer Jul 7, 10:42 a.m.
Yeah, like she did such a great job. She did so well that her own party would not back her.
jeffjohnson123 Jul 7, 10:33 a.m.
Spoken like a true third world representative.
jeffjohnson123 Jul 7, 10:07 a.m.
Birth-right citizenship needs to be repealed to slow the infusion of the criminal Latino community into our political system.
mike275132 Jul 7, 9:54 a.m.
Yes, Obama should issue an "Executive Order" dictating who should be in the NC Legislature.
Only the best Quota fillers will do....
mike275132 Jul 7, 9:51 a.m.
"Women make up half of North Carolina’s population but occupy only 22 percent of seats in the statehouse"
Remember now, it's all about the quota system and "Social Justice" .
Billy the Kid Jul 7, 9:47 a.m.
gotnoid Jul 7, 9:40 a.m.
The premise of this article seems to be that only women or Latinos can represent the interests of their specific group. So are you saying if elected that they would not represent the best policy of all the folks of NC?
It occurs to me that the candidates with the most votes wins the election regardless of gender, race etc.
Is that not the right way to do it?
computer trainer Jul 7, 9:37 a.m.
Let's go back about 15 years and see how many women and minorities were in the legislature during that time? WRAL, how about doing that for us? You seem to want to stir this up, so let's get ALL the facts.
raleighboy524 Jul 7, 9:36 a.m.
While I agree that the percentage of women in the Legislature is an interesting fact for examination and discussion, to call it a "vestige of a thick glass ceiling that still lingers over the lawmaking body" is highly misleading -- unless, and only unless, the male lawmakers acted to keep women out of the Legislature. If the male lawmakers acted to keep women lawmakers off committees or out of leadership positions on committees, then that would qualify as a glass celing lingering over the Legislature.
Anita Woody Jul 7, 9:22 a.m.
The old white male establishment will be done in a decade. Thank goodness!
There is a reason they are trying everything possible to keep control. Our country will be better when these old white codgers die off and the next generation of inclusive and tolerant children start becoming leaders.
Wiser_now Jul 7, 9:12 a.m.
European American Jul 7, 9:03 a.m.
Yeah, even the dead.
wildpig777 Jul 7, 9:03 a.m.
there is a reason, it is the rich boys club- exclusive to demo's and repub's who are looking out for you- when they are not going to prison- see how much they have done for you and me -- the citizens of this state over the last 5 decades?
Super Hans Jul 7, 8:48 a.m.
This situation needs to be remedied right now.
mep Jul 7, 8:47 a.m.
WRAL stirring up the politics again..... Democracy ensures we get the leaders we elect. Voter ID ensures those elected are done by citizens eligible to do so.
PanthersFan45 Jul 7, 8:42 a.m.
I just don't see many of either on the ballot, even in the primaries. You would think in Raleigh you would see more diversity because of the many registered democratic voters. Interesting to see the loan hispanic is a republican.
Billy the Kid Jul 7, 8:04 a.m.
You beat me to it. I don't recall to many women ads and not one "Latino". If race and gender doesn't matter, why this story?
oldschoolrules Jul 6, 5:10 p.m.
The last time I checked, anyone is free to run for office!
kgtvzw Jul 6, 9:10 a.m.
The way that I see things is that since the overwhelming majority of Mexicans who live in NC are not eligible to obtain a state-issued driver's license, they will not be able to participate in the political process. Perhaps, Apodaca should go out into the farming communities and encourage illegal immigrants to work toward their citizenship, first. The right to vote has to be EARNED in this country, not handed to you simply due to statistical representation of a specific number.
Goalieman Jul 6, 9:02 a.m.
So! Maybe they are not interested!
Why do we try to balance gender and/or race in everything we do? The best person for the job is 1) qualified, 2) wants to be there 3) and knows how to think with the shoe on the other foot!
tatermommy52 Jul 5, 8:01 p.m.
The way the Democrats treated the first female governor is why they don't run.
abaco350 Jul 5, 4:34 p.m.
History shows us that qualified people who represent the thoughts of the voters will be elected regardless of gender or race or ethnicity. The point of this story is that not enough liberals are in the GA. Typical WRAL point of view.
scubagirl2 Jul 5, 1:43 p.m.
Well that would be obvious just from looking at votes, not faces or skin color.
disgusted2010 Jul 5, 12:55 p.m.
I guess WRAL will not be satisfied until THEY pick all the representatives.
The Political Correctness shown by WRAL is sickening.
Raleigh Rocks 1 Jul 5, 12:16 p.m.
The scarcity of female legislators can result in laws that lack the perspectives of women, said Sen. Valerie Foushee, D-Orange.
Idiocy. Women vote.
itsyoureternalsoul Jul 5, 11:55 a.m.
Any person inside the established electoral guidelines is welcome to run for office in the General Assembly, and other positions of leadership.
Libertarian1 Jul 5, 11:55 a.m.
Solution: Since NC is a Conservative but becoming a more Libertarian state, run women and Hispanics that reflect the conservative/libertarian voting block. Elect women like Marilyn Avalon that is popular among Conservatives and Libertarians. When Liberals run and show their true core beliefs, and do not pretend to be something they are not, Liberals cannot win.
Most voters could care less about color, race or ethnicity but look at a candidates ideology and how they view the issues.
mike275132 Jul 5, 11:19 a.m.
What's most important is to fill a Quota,
And of course the very Hispanic Sir Walter Raleigh and Mexico founded Carolina del Norte
