There should be much stronger federal oversight of any money sent to Indian tribes. As described in this article most of it is completely wasted and not spent correctly on its intended purpose(s).

So based on one article on one tribe you're able to make a blanket assertion that "most of it is completely wasted and not correctly" or do you have actual, factual information to base that comment? Exactly what percentage of funds going to the hundreds of tribes constitutes "most"? Or, like usual, rather than be able to actually back up the statement (the Coharie total less than 3000 of a population of 3,000,000 registered indians, or less than .1%. Not exactly "most") it is easier to just make a blanket statement that invokes an emotional response rather than a truly accurate response to a problem.

Crooks, crooks, crooks, gleefully taking federal money and wasting it; just like another local "tribe". No wonder they couldn't get recognition despite McIntyre's efforts. I'm confused as to how they get so much from the Federal cofers, yet not even be recognized. Make a life for yourself just like the rest of us. The past is gone and the future depends on your own individual efforts.

all too familiar story when it comes to our tax money being wasted with no oversight. the leaders in washington don't care as it's not their money.

Why are the taxpayers being asked to send money to Indian tribes anyway? Does everyone in this country feel that they are owed money to by the govt.? Apparently so. I for one, am very tired of funding all this nonsense.

  • mafiamic Feb 21, 10:11 a.m.

North Carolina’s Coharie Indian Tribe has received millions of dollars in federal funding over the years, including stimulus money for housing.

So they should,YOU stole their land from them,YOU forced them to live in small reservations,YOU pushed them aside.,
The government shopuld rightfully be giving the tribes any tribe money or give them their land back!

  • mack24 Feb 21, 10:12 a.m.

I'm with MoBlues.... My family also chose to immigrate from Ireland due to potato famine and came here, dropping the "O" from their name to avoid persecution. Where's our funding???? They didn't need it... They made lives for themselves!!!

So we (the tax payers) just give these people money and there are no government checks and balances?!!!!

  • Danny22 Feb 21, 12:12 p.m.

That's our hard earned tax money and this is how it is spent. Somebody needs to go to jail.

  • stoop24 Feb 21, 12:13 p.m.

I'm not sure why we're funding this in the first place, but I also won't blame them if they told the US Govt to shove it. They would probably like their american property back which is about 2.3 billion acres.

So, anyone who feels that they have ever been done wrong is due money from the govt., which comes out of people's pockets who had nothing to do with it? Following that line of thinking, just about everyone should be in line for some govt money of some kind. It is this type of thinking that is breaking the backs of the working class, who are called upon to pay for all this garbage.

I'm withdrawing from posting on this matter because I have been put to shame and my ignorance has come to light.... Seems like the majority share my opinion.

I am Native American from a recognized tribe we do not get anything for free. I have paid my own kids way through college bought my own house I have worked for 31 years and have not received a dime from our tribe but we do have a huge hospital we have differant types of job for memebers of the tribe and we have to have pedagree cards to prove that we are members of the tribe. I don't know why they would want government or BIA to interfere in their tribe when our tribe is trying to get away from them and taking care of ourself.

  • sidecutter Feb 21, 1:52 p.m.

We owe them nothing. It's called the "spoils of war". We fought a war and they lost. Harsh maybe, but reality

  • DontVote4LiarsCheatsOrThieves Feb 21, 1:53 p.m.

I don't understand why our government gives out money, then doesn't follow up behind to ensure it's adequately audited and distributed.

No wonder so much scam goes on while our taxes go up and up and up.

    It's insane!!!

Maybe you need to look at history again!!!! The Native American Indians were forced off their land by the WHITE man who took it by force not war!!! As for you owing anything to my people you are right but YOUR government does so get over it.

  • bluegray Feb 21, 2:58 p.m.

    They received peanuts.
I wish the people up in arms here were this upset when plane loads of $100 dollar bills disappeared in Iraq.

  • jancaa Feb 21, 4:16 p.m.

I am native American and I have never been giving anything by the government or any type of welfare. I have worked bought My own homes and cars. Heck I also bought 8 acres of land that was for a fact stolen from my ancestors. Yes I said stolen. Plus I pay taxes on my land.. so when u people with your negative remarks talk about my tribe no what u r talking about...and we r the Coharie Indian people not them Indians how would u like me snapping remarks at your race and the railroad stuff well We American Indians didn't invite u here nor the pilgrims... And every race in America receives hud and section 8 housing for low income individuals.

  • diana123 Feb 21, 4:34 p.m.

oh please. a grain of sand compared to what the anglo saxon did to the native american from disease to slaughter.

  • Danny22 Feb 21, 7:15 p.m.

I'm amazed that folks on here think it's okay to steal. There are NO excuses, no matter who you are.

  • Jump1 Feb 26, 3:42 p.m.

During the meeting, fellow member Isabell Freeman Elliott urged the board to stop dwelling on questions of missing money. Seems like she has something to hide, like the money. There needs to be an investigation by the government as to what did happen to the money, each of the board members is responsible for its use.
