Let me get this right. Unemployment benefit cuts, no budging on minimum wage... yet Duke gets a pay increase approved by... the government.

    Get 'em Roy!

"scuba if you are a shareholder why would you disagree with making more money? Yes it will be on the backs of all customers, but that is what investing is all about." nachochezz

This is why conservatives have a fundamental misunderstanding of math. IF, and that's a big if, one has a mutual fund or with Duke in it or regular stock, unless you are a Huge shareholder, if you own or rent a building in NC most likely you will LOSE $ on the deal. Out of state investors are smiling, their portfolio improves on our loss.

"More Democrat fat cats getting rich off the hard working, tax paying Republican man." cbuckyoung

LOL!!!! You have your parties backwards for one thing, but if you put your partisanship aside for a moment- this is about corporate greed of the powerful, which is transforming us into a third world country, not about Rs & Ds.

  • junkmail5 Sep 25, 4:04 p.m.

Yes it was approved in 2012, but it was in the works long before that. And why would anyone want to block it? These are two corps. deciding to merge. Don't really see your point- nachochezz

    Let me help you then:

    Original post:

you and scuba must go to the anti gop meetings together. You guys are blaming the gop for something that was in play long before the gop got control. They had nothing and could do nothing about this merger. nachochezz

    Your post NOW:

So what if they didn't block it.- Nachochezz

Do you see the point yet?

You claimed they had nothing to do with the deal, and "could do nothing" about the merger.

Now you admit they sure COULD have, but simply didn't do so.

Hopefully the point has been clarified.

  • jonstewartrules Sep 25, 3:37 p.m.

You mean there still IS a utilities commission? Figured that was just more gubmint regumalations interferin' with all them jobz kreeaytors. Git rid of em! Bizznesses know whats good fur us, our right wing folks sayz so.

  • notexactly Sep 25, 3:25 p.m.

Yes it was approved in 2012, but it was in the works long before that. And why would anyone want to block it? These are two corps. deciding to merge. Don't really see your point. So what if they didn't block it. Do you think the previous admin. would have?

  • corey3rd2 Sep 25, 3:21 p.m.

We GRANNIES don't want handouts, we want someone to stop the big utility companies from GOUGING us, making them charge REASONABLE rates so we can continue to take care of ourselves by ourselves.

And when a company raises rates just to keep MILLIONS going into the pockets of their top executives and shareholders - THAT'S GOUGING!!!"

So you hate the free market? Are you a Soviet style Granny? You're living in the future you created. Thanks for nothing.

Duke is run by Democrats interested only in the next "green" technology. That was the whole purpose of firing the CEO of Progress.
    veyor

That is truly ludicrous, Duke run by Democrats......"green" technologies, hilarious.

  • Scubagirl Sep 25, 2:49 p.m.

    "greed also drives prices"

    and there you have it!

  • veyor Sep 25, 2:38 p.m.

The Utilities Commission is absoltely useless. Duke is run by Democrats interested only in the next "green" technology. That was the whole purpose of firing the CEO of Progress.

  • junkmail5 Sep 25, 2:28 p.m.

junk this was going on long before 2010. I just so happen to know several close friends that work at progress. And it would have happened regardless of who was in control.
    nachochezz

    ... what?

the merger was approved in 2012.

2 years AFTER the GOP took control of state government.

If the GOP controlled NCGA had wished to block it, they certainly could have.

  • lprop Sep 25, 2:28 p.m.

When big business need money or want money they just increase their prices or rates. Where does the low and middle income go to get extra income when they need it to live on. One day big business is going to look down from the top and the lake is going to be dry. Then where will they go for more money. Maybe someone at the top needs to look down and start thinking about reducing some prices. Supply and demand drive prices but greed also drives prices.

  • Scubagirl Sep 25, 2:27 p.m.

THANK YOU Cooper, but I'm not holding my breath. Seems the Pope & Koch folks have it all sewn up and we don't count!

  • changedmyname Sep 25, 2:26 p.m.

Well, slap me stupid. Heck I thought they had already gotten their rate raise, when the power went off each day that was hot and a thunderstorm came through, then took 4 hours to fix it. Which took me seven hours to cool the darn house down in order to sleep. The meter was just a turning. Never used to have power outages when we had Progress. BOO HOO

  • dmzac Sep 25, 2:21 p.m.

    V O T E NO! FOR THE BONDS!!!

  • dmzac Sep 25, 2:19 p.m.

The North Carolina Utilities Commission on Tuesday approved a rate increase for Duke Energy that stemmed from negotiations between the company and the North Carolina Public Staff, which represents consumers in utility cases. THESE CLOWNS REPRESENT CONSUMERS: ARE YOU FRICKING KIDDING ME??

"This decision reflects a balance between the needs of our company and those of our customers," Newton said in a news release. HOW IN THE WORLD DOES AN INCREASE MEET THE NEEDS OF THE CUSTOMERS???

  • DontVote4LiarsCheatsOrThieves Sep 25, 2:18 p.m.

DTB2 - "Thanks Roy for trying to stand up to corporate greed..."

    AMEN!!!

So many talk badly about Cooper, but he's stood the line for us more than once in situations like this.

  • DontVote4LiarsCheatsOrThieves Sep 25, 2:16 p.m.

whatelseisnew - "Then YOU HELP granny. You can donate money to funds that help low income people pay their power bills."

    I AM GRANNY!!!

No one helps me pay my bills. Never have, never will. As long as there is breath in my body, though my body is bent and often wracked with pain, I will do whatever it takes, working little part-time jobs, doing other people's laundry, house sitting, pet sitting, whatever, to pay my own bills myself. Thank you very much!!!

It's called character and integrity, something many young people know nothing about nowadays.

We GRANNIES don't want handouts, we want someone to stop the big utility companies from GOUGING us, making them charge REASONABLE rates so we can continue to take care of ourselves by ourselves.

"The increase gives Duke a 10.2 percent return on equity and an extra $235 million in annual revenue."

What a crock!!! The Utilities Commission needs to be restaffed with low-income people who scrape to pay their bills every month.

Thanks Cooper for going after them for this travesty!!!

  • whatelseisnew Sep 25, 1:52 p.m.

If the Wake county bond passes I will pay more than twice the amount in higher taxes, than I will have to pay for something that I actually use. There is another option to use instead of building more schools, but the greedy government always wants to grow itself and take ever more money from those of us that pay for everything.

  • whatelseisnew Sep 25, 1:50 p.m.

"How nice. An avid Obama supporter is sticking it to NC customers. Poor little granny will have to eat less to pay for her utility bill."

Then YOU HELP granny. You can donate money to funds that help low income people pay their power bills.

"You can always count on Chuck to come through with another inane statement. This really isn't about politics, it's about profit, greed, and keeping Wall Street happy. The 10 million is peanuts and just a way for them to claim they "care"."

There is nothing more Greedy and Profitable than Government. If you do not like your power bill, then stop using electric. Unlike Government Duke can not force you to buy anything.

  • whatelseisnew Sep 25, 1:46 p.m.

Well gee, why is cooper not taking the Wake County School board to court to stop the request for an almost 10 percent tax increase? Oh yeah, thats right, Cooper is a Dem and to him Government is the only entity that should be allowed to have any money.

  • dwntwnboy2 Sep 25, 1:44 p.m.

Amazing the things you can get away with when you have an monopoly. Thanks Roy for trying to stand up to corporate greed- of course what else could we expect, the current governor used to do "something" for them, but could never really tell us what...now we know- help them rake in even more record profits!!

  • notexactly Sep 25, 1:07 p.m.

    southertalent.

I have considered that. I now heat my home, which was all gas and one heat pump upstairs, with an outdoor wood boiler. Saves me around 2500 to 3000 a year. Heats my water too. But the wind and solar, is way to expensive and way to space demanding right now. you would have to have a tremendous amount of space to have enough equipment to run your house without the POWER co. I know it would help with the cost of power .but it would take a long time to recup your money. My boiler cost was paid for in three years. Now it pays me

Another great job of "government" protecting the citizens. More Democrat fat cats getting rich off the hard working, tax paying Republican man. And, more Democrat hidden welfare by agreeing to pay $10 million to agencies that "help low-income residents with their electric bills". How about the Democrats for once helping the hard working taxpayers. More of the same from the Bev Perdue, Jim Hunt, Roy Cooper wrecking crew.

You can always count on Chuck to come through with another inane statement. This really isn't about politics, it's about profit, greed, and keeping Wall Street happy. The 10 million is peanuts and just a way for them to claim they "care".

  • southerntalent Sep 25, 12:34 p.m.

Start now using solar power and wind power, then you will be prepared to cut your self off the grid and tell duke power to have a nice day. Buy and Use a generator a few days a week.trust me they come in handy in a storm or ice storm.

  • GOPtakersSociety Sep 25, 12:31 p.m.

Well isn't this just great. the Obama voters on welfare can sit on their can blabing on their Obama phones while those of us who pay the full amount of our electric bill MUST PAY for those that don't!

    stevek2

so??? what your saying is that there are zero GOP voters that have these so-called Obamaphones, and zero GOP voters that are on Government assistance? and zero GOP voters getting what you call freebie Handouts? is that correct? if so, you and your herd of sheep are more clueless than first thought!

  • Taffy Sep 25, 12:21 p.m.

so much for the "merger" saving consumers money as promised. It's a energy monopoly in NC! And this is just the beginning of the rate hikes. And service has deteriorated from Progress's high performance and communication of problem resolutions. Progress under promised when power would be restored, over delivered and always called to let us know that power was restored (in case it really wasn't). Duke has over promised, under delivered, promised to notify when restored and has never called.

  • junkmail5 Sep 25, 12:18 p.m.

    ... what?

the GOP has had control of the GA (including enough to override vetos) since 2010.

    The merger was in 2012.

Good I to hold both parties to blame. Glad you cleared that up. FYI, I am not a state employee, but I do work for a government agency, so I to fell your pain. My brother and his spouse do work for the state, so I do not have a bad attitude toward state workers.

if you are a shareholder why would you disagree with making more money? Yes it will be on the backs of all customers, but that is what investing is all about. Oh and by the way, if the cruel repubs are getting their power from DPE then they will pay the same rate as you and me. I don't agree with the increase, but don't blame the repubs. they had nothing to do with it. I mean if you own shares(bought stock for a price hoping to get a higher price in the future) How do you think the price increase happens? Its called PROFIT. And you being a shareholder will profit from your investment (risk). So you must be part of the evil investor crowds the 99 percenters complain about.

  • Trut4 Sep 25, 11:54 a.m.

All of you people commenting do realize that this rate increase is for the old Duke Energy customers in the Greensboro/Charlotte/Western part of the state? This rate increase has nothing to do with the old Progress Energy area that is now part of Duke Energy.
And to the customer that stated that his electric coop was so great: Duke supplies your power and the coop just marks up the price and distributes it.

  • junkmail5 Sep 25, 11:54 a.m.

blabing on their Obama phones - stevek2

you know these only exist in your imagination, right?

  • wildpig777 Sep 25, 11:51 a.m.

NACHO EATER--no I hold both parties equally liable-- in fact the demo's due to being in control of nc for the last 120 yrs more liable in reducing the state employees and teachers into groveling for misererly raises.... shame on both parties and shame on nc citizens for having the bad attitude that exists towards out state employees and teachers.

  • notexactly Sep 25, 11:50 a.m.

you and scuba must go to the anti gop meetings together. You guys are blaming the gop for something that was in play long before the gop got control. They had nothing and could do nothing about this merger.

    PIG
there you go blaming the GOP for something they had no control over. Man do you guys go to brainwash meetings together? At least they get a raise. I think it should be higher!! But the last NC STATE GOVERNMENT didn't do that well either for teachers or state workers. I am all for paying a tax if they would get all of the proceeds. But you know that they would get a small percent of it and the directors and supers would get the lion share of it.

  • wildpig777 Sep 25, 11:30 a.m.

meanwhile-- teachers and state employees get a 1% raise in six plus yrs........ I think even you jaded private citizens who only marginally accept teachers and state employees REALIZE that our public servants HAVE BEEN USED AND ABUSED BY THE NORTH CAROLINA STATE GOVERNEMENT.

  • stevek2 Sep 25, 11:26 a.m.

Quote: The Charlotte-based utility also agreed to pay a total of $10 million to agencies that help low-income residents with their electric bills.

  • Scubagirl Sep 25, 11:21 a.m.

And I NEVER was in favor of this merger. Progress is (was) sooooo much better than DE

  • Scubagirl Sep 25, 11:13 a.m.

THIEVES!!!!!!! So much for a break for customers, so much for no rate increases.

"he increase gives Duke a 10.2 percent return on equity and an extra $235 million in annual revenue."

guess the big corporation, Mr. Pope and the Kock boys all need MORE money, while those of us who PAY these increases, well we just don't matter. This is disgusting! I can't disagree with this more both from a customer standpoint AND a shareholder standpoint. It's JUST NOT THE RIGHT THING TO DO!!!!!

  • seeingthru Sep 25, 11:12 a.m.

I am so sorry that as an ex progress power employee l even thought this merger was a good idea.
