come one ppl. how did this become a race issue. its the cheif of police making a poor statement on a defence attorney.

  • BubbaDukeforPresident Sep 18, 2013

Lopez has a point. Defense attorneys are more interested in the money than they are in justice.

What Lopez allegedly said is the same thing that is said by people in the military and any job that one is required to put their life on the line for others. These jobs are under appreciated and exposes the soldier/law enforcement officer to the darker side of society. Often you wonder if you're making things better or worse. What Lopez said was a rhetorical comment, not an intention to harm someone. We are overly sensitive today. This is not progress. It's whining at its worst; and divisive. Give it a rest.

Attorney: Durham police chief's shooting comment indicative of greater issue

Correct, the racism of the attorney.

  • didisaythat Sep 17, 2013

I hope the Chief is not taking a moments thought on this issue. There is a subject with a gun at an intersection in downtown Durham and several of the people here are worried if the Chief made a bad joke.

  • keithjinnc Sep 17, 2013

At the time of the shooting the defense attorney who was shot made a statement to the media basically defending the person(s) who shot him. He didn’t hold a press conference or protest to cry out for the community to come together and put an end to the violence! Yet the chief of police makes a joke and the same person who defended those who shot him couldn’t find a soapbox to leap up on quick enough… "There is a bigger picture here, and it's not about the individual," "I mean, yes, a bad decision was made by telling a joke, but did it affect the community, you have to ask yourself, 'How?' Get over it! It was a joke…..

  • keithjinnc Sep 17, 2013

Lopez should have been fired. End of story. “Obamacare for everyone”

Your screen name definitely explains your comment! I guess the chief should have stuck to “blonde” jokes… Really people, this story and protest are about as news worthy as the morale Monday’s stuff. Public defendants are public servants themselves and I am sure this public defender has probably made a joke or two himself about law enforcement personnel. Chief go back to work and focus on what’s important, the safety and wellbeing of your community and your officers. BTW; May be time to find a “loyal” assistant chief who would not stroll over his mother to get ahead!

  • dollibug Sep 17, 2013

Law enforcement should know better. Seems like there are a lot of people who have NOT been properly trained for the positions that they are in. Communication, training and interpretation of the laws are the main issues which make the world go round and there are lots of people who are lacking in some of them or perhaps all.

  • arfamr1008 Sep 17, 2013

Next course of action for liberals...outlaw ALL humor and sarcasm in the workplace!!

  • didisaythat Sep 17, 2013

Thank you for the person that is now in charge of what police officers can and cannot joke about. Can I get the number to the office of what I can and cannot say for the next time I am at a party and want to make a joke?

  • forddp Sep 17, 2013

LEOs always make exaggerated comments about defense attorneys. I was a defense attorney for a number of years and heard them all the time. If I had gotten bent out of shape everytime I heard one, I would be in Guinness as the world's greatest human pretzel. Usually I would respond by saying something about doughnuts.

  • eyeoneastsky Sep 17, 2013

The police chief did not say he made the comment. And Forbes has no proof he did make the comment.

  • genralwayne Sep 17, 2013

Holy Poli Correctness! Police Chiefs are veteran police officers - hardened by years of struggle, tragedy, and violence. I expect my chief to be direct, vocal, and hard as nails. A city like Durham needs a hardball, experienced cop in charge. Not some whiney little Pollyanna politician who weighs every word. Give the guy a break!

  • Relic Sep 17, 2013

but "to protect and serve" is rarely practiced now

You have no idea what you're talking about. I dare you to go to the agency where you live and ask to do a "ride along" with an officer if it's allowed. You'll change your story. As to "joking about someone shot" YOU work a job all these years when seeing death and tragedy and horror and sadness and things done and then having a person that did it portrayed by a lawyer as some "victim" and then deal with them on a daily basis and see if YOU don't make a crack to ease the tension. If he had said it about a schoolteacher or a nun or a pastor or even a prostitute I can see people getting upset. But do you expect most cops to really LIKE lawyers as a whole? Reality check, aisle 2.

  • Relic Sep 17, 2013

"Lopez should have been fired. End of story."

For what? Making a lawyer joke? The jails would be full. Give me one thing other than an ill timed joke that he's done to merit being fired. End of story.

  • Relic Sep 17, 2013

Lopez is from an ethnic group that is a LARGER MINORITY than blacks! And they want him to take "racial equity training"? He did SAY ANYTHING ABOUT A PERSON'S RACE. He cracked a joke about a LAWYER! You know, like "What do you call a lawyer at the bottom of the ocean? Not enough." "Why don't sharks eat lawyers? Professional courtesy." Chief Lopez is an ETHNIC MINORITY originally from an area which has a LARGE BLACK POPULATION. He's not some stereotypical big bellied Sheriff from "Smokey and the Bandit". He's had some of the best training on minority sensitivity and several degrees and courses where minority issue training is REQUIRED. This is an obvious move by a subordinate officer to try to get the Chief out and these "activist" groups continue to show that they know NOTHING about the training required to become a Law Enforcement Chief Executive in the first place.

  • Obamacare for everyone Sep 17, 2013

Lopez should have been fired. End of story.

  • glarg Sep 17, 2013

He is kind of proving the point by being a nuisance.

  • irishale Sep 17, 2013

"Attorney: Durham police chief's shooting comment indicative of greater issue"

Yes... the issue being that some people have to make things about race whenever possible.

Yes, Daryl Atkinson, we understand. Its always racial. Always.

  • Naysayer Sep 17, 2013

They should worry more about the gang problems, that would be much more helpful.

  • tierneemalinadeveaux Sep 17, 2013

woodrock223, I absolutely agree with you. Though I may have thought twice about making those comments in public, I can completely understand where Lopez was coming from. The defense attorneys will move heaven and earth to get the defendant a reduced sentence or no sentence at all when they both know that the defendant is GUILTY. I know defense attorneys have a job to do, but at what cost? When does one of their loved ones have to be brutalized for them to feel the vulnerability that the public feels when we read that the scum of the earth has once again been set free to wreak havoc on the general public?

I have so little respect for these so-called "civil rights groups" such as the NAACP because they keep racism alive. EVERY THING IS NOT ABOUT RACE. Get over it! Sometimes people do foolish things and they need to pay the price, whether they are black, white, or other. Oh, and by the way, before you call me a racist, I am a BLACK person.

  • lopo Sep 17, 2013

Hard to believe this is news, sounds like school children who took the others lunch money. Grow up, get over it.

  • Makami Sep 17, 2013

    HE DON'T DENY THE COMMENT????????????????????????

  • didisaythat Sep 17, 2013

Sounds to me like Assistant Chief Forbes and this "Fostering Alternative Drug Enforcement" group are working together to get Mr. Forbes a promotion. Wonder if that will then get this group some assistance in promoting their cause. Back scratcher meet my back.

  • woodrock223 Sep 17, 2013

"...Lopez reportedly told members of his department that Hall deserved to be shot because he is a defense attorney..."

dont get me wrong, highly inappropriate thing for a police chief to make to anyone that he works with. in todays world, you're just asking for it.

the chief said that he should be shot b/c he was a defense attorny, not b/c he's black.

the real racist people here are the black folks.

  • lazyrebel Sep 17, 2013

Cops have too much power whether you are black or white.

  • Conservative Sep 17, 2013

How about fixing the problems inside your own culture rather than blaming others?

Too difficult and intimidating because it calls for introspection!

  • stymieindurham Sep 17, 2013

Everybody wants to be in the spotlight!!

  • 68_dodge_polara Sep 17, 2013

These race baiters have already caused so much damage to Durham just as the Lacrosse fiasco they come in and throw around a bunch false accusations and have hate full protests and leave having made their fat pay day and leaving nothing but hatred and Durham to pick up the pieces.

  • eyeoneastsky Sep 17, 2013

NAAWP- Now there is an idea whose time has come. There is no "greater issue" within the PD. If the attorney cannot produce an audio of the purported comment by the chief, and nobody else heard the comment but disgruntled Forbes, then his accusation should not be given any attention at all. It does not pay to appease the enemy.

  • hapd Sep 17, 2013

It is always someone else s fault never your own. Instead of pointing a finger at someone else there are three other fingers pointing at yourself. Figure it out guys!!

  • baldchip Sep 17, 2013

Sounds like the race baiters are in full view!! Durham has a b ig, bad problem-too many crooks-too many lawyers getting too many crooks off on nit picks!!

In addition, too many crooks have too many guns. Again, if the gun contol advacates figure out how to get the guns away from bad guys, we'll get somewhere!!

  • PDMARTIN Sep 17, 2013

Now you know if we did that, they would first say it was a racist organization and second try to get in saying they are being discriminated against. You see no matter what white people do they are wrong.

  • PDMARTIN Sep 17, 2013

my first post did get up cause I "suggested" I may have said the same thing the cheif "may" have said. I find that interesting because I'm sure there are alot of people who have said the same thing and in a joking manner. Please moderators don't let your personal views get in the way.

  • beachlvr0804 Sep 17, 2013

"It's because public defenders are the people's defenders." Public defenders are also defenders of the most guilty......and fight to get them off to go out and commit more crime....

  • Walkin Man Sep 17, 2013

Like the NAACP isn't racist. What if we founded the NAAWP? What's good for the goose is good for the gander.

  • mandre4 Sep 17, 2013

Got it. Everyone is racist. You, me, Chief of Police, NAACP, etc. EVERYONE. Once you realize this, we'll all be better off.

  • beachlvr0804 Sep 17, 2013

Just another "racial" bandwagon to jump on. I support the Durham Police Chief. Get off the bandwagon people and get your panties out of a wad. Hyper sensitive people will cry foul no matter what is said or what context it is said in.

  • Joe.Bean Sep 17, 2013

glad our priorities are straight in this country. My pen writes in red, does that mean im racist? Get it together America.

  • eyeoneastsky Sep 17, 2013

Some men are too fat for their own britches. It escapes the ability of some to reason that they were turned down for a promotion because there was somebody more qualified and deserving than them.

  • stymieindurham Sep 17, 2013

This attorney is as embarrassing as the assistant chief who also makes "non-sense" accusations.

  • PDMARTIN Sep 17, 2013

Just another case of not being able to say anything or someone will take it out of context and make it a racail issue. Too sad that our country has come to this.

  • feelin41 Sep 17, 2013

If he made that comment, he was probably making reference to the revolving door in our judicial system and not singling out that particular lawyer. Maybe he meant all lawyers in general. Law enforcement are arresting these people committing crimes and they are out and back on the street within 24 hours doing the same thing. They go to court, get a slap on the hand and its done. If I were an officer I would probably feel the same way. This isn't about race so stop trying to turn it in to that.

  • BernsteinIII Sep 17, 2013

He talks about "racist policies", yet fails to cite just one policy that the Police have that is racist.

The culture that needs to change is the culture that screams "racism" at the drop of a hat.

  • Conservative Sep 17, 2013

Why is WRAL so obsessed with every possible racial issue regardless of merit? Idea! Why not hire the Rev. Barber as an unbiased news reporter and cut out the middle man.

WRAL is obsessed because it sells! Plain and simple as that!

  • bill0 Sep 17, 2013

"I don't know what the chief said but even if he made the comment I am sure it was a joke"

The context was that a lawyer in the public defender pool was shot along with several drug dealers. He was one of the guys who always blames society for the acts of criminals. (He actually did the same thing for the guy who shot him!) The chief made a remark about how only thu gs and drug dealers were hurt in the shooting. Someone pointed out that this lawyer was also shot and the chief said that he deserved what he got.

So yeah, not so much joking. The chief clearly doesn't have a lot of respect for this particular lawyer. That doesn't mean he hates are defense lawyers, but he clearly wasn't too fond of this one.

  • gnewsome1 Sep 17, 2013

Well, I guess it's better to be the protestor than the protestee.

  • Sister Golden Hair Sep 17, 2013

Sick to death of hearing the words racist and disenfranchised. Some need to stay in school, learn to contribute to society and improve the outcome of their lives. Put on some big boy/girl pants and quit acting like a toddler going through the terrible twos. It is up to the individual to achieve. No one else will do it for you. The constant ranting gains no respect. Your problems are not skin color and not everything you see as negative is about race.

  • donnied19522 Sep 17, 2013

Oh my gosh, Lopez was making a joke, he was not serious. Society has become way too serious about everything.

  • foodstamptrader Sep 17, 2013

"Wanna see racism up close and personal, have a white go into a black community." - My3centsworth

Or just walk down the American Tobacco Trail in Durham while being white...

  • My3centsworth Sep 17, 2013

wanna stop racism in Durham, then start with the black community. Wanna see racism up close and personal, have a white go into a black community.
