North Carolina is one of only twelve states that does not have any form of recall elections. Currently, our only recourse is to wait for regular elections to occur. At times we find that our elected officials do not act on our behalf, are unresponsive or incompetent. I began a petition on Change.org in an attempt to remedy this situation. If you would like to sign it, go here:

We have too many restrictions put on us from the GOP. Where are these imaginary jobs the Governor is promising. The state is headed in the direction of Detroit. Ashamed to be a part of NC right now. -Pandora1230

I could not agree with this statement more; McCrory turned out to be the liar I thought him to be. I too am ashamed to be associated with NC currently.

It isn't Republicans that want to regulate what you eat, what you drive, what books you read, what fuel you use, where you live, what condiments you can put on your food, what weapons you can use to defend yourself- Wood Chipper

Well.... it kind of IS them for some of it....books in particular are often banned, or attempted to be banned, by them.... they also want to regulate who you can marry, which is a bit more important to most people than how large a big gulp they can buy...they also want to restrict WHICH religious schools can get govt. funding... (christian ok, anything else not so much....).... restricting abortion rights... and for personal freedoms, it was a republican who brought us the patriot act and warrant-less wiretaps.

Not that the left doesn't do stupid things in this area as you mentioned some of- but to suggest the GOP is ALL ABOUT personal freedom and doesn't try to restrict it in many ways is to deny the truth.

  • davidgnews Jul 22, 4:38 p.m.

The GOP (unfortunately) may want to get into your bedroom, but the Left wants to control every other room in your house.
    Wood Chipper

That's a lame argument when you consider dems and pugs are both a means to an end.

  • JustOneGodLessThanU Jul 22, 4:32 p.m.

@woodchipper, thanks for the reply. But, your “big government” examples are merely transportation & food centric?...with background checks for dangerous weapons thrown in? Is that all you got? ;-)

How about we talk REAL Big Government laws that the Republicans are creating?

Let’s Change our State’s Constitution...the Biggest Government that we Americans have...and make it so you can’t love and marry the person you want.

Then, let’s create laws that get between you and your doctor, second guess your decisions and then require unnecessary irrevelant procedures that require them to insert something into your privates. (Google transvag ultrasound if you don’t understand this)

Next, let’s pass laws about the types of sex that you’re allowed to have in the privacy of your own bedroom...in your own house. (google sodomy)

    Etcetera.

And, you’re upset about gas prices, being stopped from polluting everyone’s drinking water or being stopped from buying your own roc

Really? It isn't Republicans that want to regulate what you eat, what you drive, what books you read, what fuel you use, where you live, what condiments you can put on your food, what weapons you can use to defend yourself, etc... these are all Liberal crusades. I'm not saying the GOP is much better, but lets not kid ourselves about who the actual control freaks are in this society. The GOP (unfortunately) may want to get into your bedroom, but the Left wants to control every other room in your house.

"gold, you want to keep taxing NC to the point of Detroit? That is what we will get if we kept following the ways of Bev and company known as the Democrat party." babedan

Detroit declined largely because the city lost half its population and along with it, most middle class jobs. Because of the diminution of unions. That is what the republicans want. Your policies of stripping erstwhile middle class families of stability, job security, decent education and the means to make ends meet will lead to the Mississippiazation and eventual Detroitization of our once great state.

Regarding state pensions being "way too high", Danny 22 wrote
"When you have retired people drawing 200,000+, something bad is wrong."

Where DID you come up with this figure??? I find it upsetting that the GA voted themselves state pensions at all for a part time job. However, I don't think anyone gets $200,000 in pension a year.

I'm a moderate--remember those? Of course you don't because for too many years now the far right and far left have dominated politics. They don't communicate with each other and they sure don't listen to constituents.

Should there be cuts? Definitely. But wouldn't it be nice for the members of the General Assembly to remove themselves and their predicessors from the state retirement and state health plan roles? Lead by example, folks

If everyone in government and public who are in charge were held accountable you would not have all these problems. If all laws were enforced you would not have all of the problems we have. The people who are receiving government funds that don't deserve it, do it because they are allowed to. It is not their fault. People will do what you allow them to do. The focus should have been creating jobs and putting good hard working decent people back to work and working on abortion and tax reform later. The next election will tell if the majority will allow them to continue.

I've adjusted my work shedule to attend Moral Monday again. Republicans are handing out corporate welfare to the folks who bought them the elections. Welfare for Art Pope's family too. I know it happens, but attacking the middle-class to pay for it is WRONG, and people know it's wrong.

I work. I don't have time for "Mondays with friends" and I'm proud to work too! I looked for my job and found it. Maybe, just maybe, if some of these protesters worked, they wouldn't have time to spend "Mondays with friends?"

Dems want stuff, they do not want to pay for it. Gee maybe we need a new program to pay for the cost of arresting and the courts costs for lefty protestors. Wouldn't want them to come out of THEIR OWN pockets.

and your assumptions are so far off, you clearly need to do some actual work and truly identify who actually is receiving "Handouts, or Free stuff" and their voting preference
of course take that away and their voting preference changes

"But your protests are just making most of us mad because the taxpayers are having to pay for your antics. " taxman

The wages of egregious mislegislation are protests, and in America, we decided we would out up with protests rather than live in a dictatorship of the elite, though some of us have apparently forgotten that. Your GA is making us mad because the taxpayers are having to pay for tax breaks for the rich, weakening of schools, increased danger of gun violence, spurious IDs being made to solve a problem that does not exist or more accurately the problem being that some folks vote for democrats.

  • whatelseisnew Jul 22, 11:27 a.m.

I have no problem with these people protesting, but I wish the ones that are intentionally creating a situation that requires them to be arrested would stop doing that. It is not necessary to be arrested to make your point. I have been taxed to death by the Government and I am sick of having to pay for nonsense. NOw many if these people were decent and actually cared, they would pay for the costs they are causing. Oops, I forgot, Dems want stuff, they do not want to pay for it. Gee maybe we need a new program to pay for the cost of arresting and the courts costs for lefty protestors. Wouldn't want them to come out of THEIR OWN pockets.

"I realized that not only do these [proposals] not make sense in the long term for North Carolina, but these things are really sitting on the back of the most vulnerable people in North Carolina," Comstock said. "As a minister, I feel like it's my responsibility to speak on that injustice and say, 'We have to do better by one another."

Wrong Mr, Minister. The left has damaged this country beyond belief. Want an understanding: see Detroit; See Illinois; See Chicago. I wonder in just those two cities, how many poor are no longer on the planet, directly due to Leftist ideas that you spout. Not saying the Repubs don't have their share of damage that they caused. Almost 17 trillion in National Debt is a testament to that. I wonder, will most of the country have to become Detroit before the leftists wake up?

  • junkmail5 Jul 22, 10:59 a.m.

It's interesting that you're accusing someone else of being "brainwashed" when your facts are not correct. A panel of three judges, including two Democrats (one was an African-American female) reviewed the redistricting plan and UNANIMOUSLY decided that there was no gerrymandering- healls

    That's an outright lie.

They determined the gerrymandering that CLEARLY HAPPENED was not racially biased to an illegal degree.

To give you a comparison, the trayvon martin case-

The jury decided Zimmerman was not guilty of murder or manslaughter.

they didn't decide Martin never got shot.

The gerrymandering was LEGAL, but it certainly happened, and can be shown pretty graphically.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/03/opinion/sunday/the-great-gerrymander-of-2012.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

In North Carolina, where the two-party House vote was 51 percent Democratic, 49 percent Republican, republicans got 9 of 13 seats, an overwhelming majority, with a MINORITY of the vote.

Hence, what up to 10,000 protesters now and growing, lol, never heard or saw that many when dems were in power... think for once and quit letting Fox News brainwash you."--banker27520

  • sweetlyght Jul 22, 9:55 a.m.

I don't see how a minister could protest in favor of abortion being a woman's right. I'm a bit indifferent myself, but I find it hard to swallow that a minister would ally with that cause, because I question the core values of such a minister.

  • Tax Man Jul 22, 9:46 a.m.

Many of us remain very thankful of what the GA is doing now! We see these protestors as "sour grapes" folk who are just sorry they lost the power after so many years. Well, we are very happy to have the power and we are going to use it for positive change in NC! If you protestors don't like it you should run for office where you can make changes! Or you can vote to change out the folks in office. But your protests are just making most of us mad because the taxpayers are having to pay for your antics. Hopefully the Judge in the cases will require you all to pay full restitution for your crimes and be banned from government property until you have paid!

  • razor2 Jul 22, 8:55 a.m.

If business leaders were not so darn selfish and would pay a living wage that would go a long ways in helping people. If the governor and the NC general assembly would get paid minimum wage so they would be in the same boat as the rest of the people they shafted things would be different. If the war against obama by the
GOP was never started we would not be in the position we are in
today. Between the GOP,failed trickle down economics and deregulation and wall street we are in the worse shape of anytime in our country's history. If we had a Governor who worked for the people in this state instead of AFP, ALEC, and Grover Norquist things would be better for everyone instead of just the wealthy of this state. I have no respect for anyone in government who take
from the middle class and less fortunate to enrich the lives of
the wealthy. Making people homeless and hungry due to policies that protect and enrich the wealthy show you what a class act our
    NC republican government are.

Everyone agrees that changes have to be made, but everyone wants business as usual. I see the people on Monday as the ones who voted against the GOP and a few who did and have changed their minds. I think if the majority of the people who voted for the GOP and change, would overpower the the people on Monday and blow them off the street. I wonder what WRAL would report then?

  • ecu4me2 Jul 20, 7:34 p.m.

After reading the article in the N and O by the Libertarians I think I will change my party affiliation. The GOP is a joke!!

  • methinkthis Jul 20, 2:47 p.m.

As a civilization we need to get past this victimization mentality. I encourage people to take a step back and think about the whole picture with regard to management of the State of North Carolina. To properly manage the state you need to encourage businesses to grow and hire. You have to limit what you give out to what you take in. If you take too much in taxes you stifle growth. Take a step back. Why is Detroit declaring bankruptcy? Why are people leaving the city? There is NO free lunch, free medical care, free pay without work. Somebody pays. If you do the math you can see that you can take all the wealth of the so called wealthy and not pay for all the handouts people are screaming for in the so-called 'moral' Mondays. Also, there is NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING 'moral' about supporting the continued murdering of unborn babies.

  • methinkthis Jul 20, 2:35 p.m.

So what is moral about "moral Mondays". Seems to be strange how you can get 'moral' out of wanting to perpetuate the murder of unborn babies or to perpetuate the nanny-state.

RE: gerrymandering - party in charge of legislature draws the districts, remember the Democratic state legislator that lead the previous redistricting and created the 13TH Congressional, then ran in that election in the tilted towards Democrats district. Repubs tilted it the other way. Should party politics be determining the structure of Congressional districts?

  • RadioDJ Jul 20, 1:33 p.m.

Right wingers hate stories like this because it forces them to defend the indefensible. So they will wiggle and worm and squirm to come up with something that sounds reasonable to their twisted way of thinking (if you can actually call it "thinking"). It is nice to see them so worried over a small protest such as this. Think of the fear they are going to have to deal with when this mushrooms into something much larger.

  • free2bme Jul 20, 9:11 a.m.

It appears that frustrations will continue because the GA continues to make decisions that serve themselves and their rich friends. I have never seen NC so divisive and mean spirited though. Hopefully this will be the last time GOP has control of this state. I think many of us have seen enough disregard to never repeat. Additionally they have alienated most minorities already and in a few years minorities collectively will be the majority.

Everyone that I have mentioned the Moocher Mondays to has no clue that they are taking place. Those I know that do, think it is ridiculous and wasting police time and taxpayer money. I guess since they think they had success with the Wake Co school board with these types of antics, they figure it might work for the next election.

  • Justic4All Jul 19, 10:30 p.m.

Yup NC is news nationally. Everyone keeps laughing and laughing at all the Monday moping over why the government is stopping the support for people to busy protesting to find a job. Yup NC is even water cooler fodder in NC. That is if you have a job with a water cooler.

As the _conservative_ columnist George F. Will recently wrote: "The idea that the strong have a right to unfettered rule if their strength is numerical is just the barbarism of `might makes right' prettified by initial adherence to democratic forms." He also pointed out the dangers of a potential theocracy, noting that the party in the majority had "promised no separation of politics and religion, hence the impossibility of pluralism, and hostility to modernity that guaranteed economic incompetence."

  • free2bme Jul 19, 8:34 p.m.
