NCGOP = BIG Government & MORE Taxes.

Somehow I don't remember them running on big government and raising taxes on 90% of the state.

  • tayled Jun 7, 8:44 a.m.

In short, this budge proposal needs to be filed under File 13 and start again.

  • tayled Jun 7, 8:43 a.m.

The housing market will suffer because of all the fees that will be taxed. Anyone who has ever bought or sold a house knows all too well how those fees can add up without the added tax on them. The already overpriced theaters will now have to raise their ticket prices to cover the new fees there, that will pretty much kill off that industry. People will be more reluctant to get their cars serviced because of the new fees, see where this is going?

  • tayled Jun 7, 6:35 a.m.

Let's see now, we lower our tax rate,...but then we literally pay tax on every service that we need after that. Doesn't sound like much of a tax cut to me. Not to mention all of the NC industries that the tax on services will kill.

  • arfamr1008 Jun 7, 5:46 a.m.

The greedy bigot right wing conservatives will take away important social programs from the poor and give tax breaks to the rich. North Carolina need to recall all the right wing conservatives in General Assembly, State House, Governor, etc.

    Proud Liberal

lol. please read the article before commenting so you don't sound so ignorant next time.

  • uragoner2 Jun 7, 3:30 a.m.

Looks like corporations are getting a tax break, while everyone else is getting a huge tax hike ! Electric bills, labor charges. Talking about less taxes hypocrisy !

  • corey3rd2 Jun 7, 12:51 a.m.

There's reforming the tax code and then there's Rich People's Welfare. How much money is Art Pope going to keep from all these reforms? Doesn't seem like they're taxing anything he likes.

  • ckblackm Jun 6, 11:17 p.m.

Just get rid of all the loopholes.. and do a flat/fair tax.

Your comments are embarrassing. "We do Pay teachers and state workers a desent wage" state workers have had their salaries frozen for years while other private and government jobs have been given substantial raises. It has been an all out assault on state workers in NC. NC may not have a teacher shortage now but the wave is coming. What high school graduate would take out $80,000 in Ed loans (the cost to attend NCState for 4 years) for a job that starts and has been stuck on 30k a year? Leaving this state would boost teacher pay by at lease 6 grand (VA) and even as high as 17 a year(GA). (Think life time earnings here)

Currently the education system is being propt by teachers in the later part of their career. They have started to leave and are taking many young teachers with them. Enjoy your savings, cause the time to pay up is coming.

Unfortunately the effects of the policies you support will be felt in a decade not in1 or even 2 legislative years.

    Nearsighted policies

  • Vox-Populi Jun 6, 8:34 p.m.

"God, the most FAIR being of all has mandated that each gives a tithe or ten percent of what they earn to support the poor and the church."

You may want to re-read your Old Testament. While God mandated Israel give a 10% tithe he also mandated a debt Jubilee (a time when debts were forgiven, property returned by the rich to the poor, and slaves freed) and a gleaning of the fields(where land owners were not allowed to pick their land clean but had to leave behind valuable produce for the poor to come by and pick for themselves for free. So you can have your flat 10% if you are willing to institute a system where the rich must return landed property to the poor and forgive their debt at regularly scheduled intervals.

  • wildlifeprocessing Jun 6, 8:07 p.m.

Proud Liberal?? Your entitlement programs are the very root of the problems today. Let the tax rate go down and more usage tax spreads the tax to those who avoid paying anytime but yet get money back every year. We have suffered enough under years of democrat control time to let the Republicans shine for a while!!

  • issymayake Jun 6, 8:04 p.m.

Taxes on car repairs, movie and concert tickets and dry cleaning. And they say they are for small businesses. . .

Welp yall go ahead and eat that cake.

  • mep Jun 6, 7:53 p.m.

We better wake up to what's happening in America before we're another third world nation...

LOL... dont worry... tax and spend even when we dont have the money Democrats, along with the entitlement mentality of this generation, coupled with our nations massive $17 trillion dollar debt will do it.

  • mep Jun 6, 7:42 p.m.

wildervb... We do pay the teachers and State workers a decent wage... if we didnt, there would be a shortage. But any shortage is due to funding.. not applicants. Further, NC turned down the Medicaid expansion because our current system is badly broken and corrupt. Do you really want to see even more tax dollars WASTED or put into the back pockets of shady docs? And your points regarding roads, colleges, environment, places to live... are just not represented by the numbers of folks moving here.

Reforming the tax codes from its corrupted, antiquated state into a revenue generating sales platform is well overdue.

  • kliberto Jun 6, 7:42 p.m.

This tax reform is the work of ALEC, American Legislative Exchange Council, which is going from state to state buying it's representives to get bills passed to the advantage of corporations and the rich, without public vote and is destroying the middle class. They are responsible for voter ID, ending public education, collective bargaining and minimum wage, amoung numerous other bills to keep citizen down. We better wake up to what's happening in America before we're another third world nation. http://www.cbpp.org/files/2-26-13fa.pdf

  • wildervb Jun 6, 7:30 p.m.

Another point, some here seem to think that paying State workers and Teachers a decent wage is stealing, how is that so? These are necessary functions of a modern society. How many of us perform as vital a service as teaching our children?

How important is clean water, safe highways, how important is it to have some income between jobs so you won't have to worry about losing everything in a economic downturn?

How sad that the ideologues now in control even turn down Federal dollars that would have helped half a million poor NC citizens get health insurance, this government turns its back on the least of our brothers just to make a political point, it is sickening.

  • Rebelyell55 Jun 6, 7:25 p.m.

We finally have a gov. and legislature willing to take the hard decisions and put them into place. Thank you.!!

    josephlawrence43

June 6, 2013 7:10 p.m.............Hard choices? The choices they're making so far is for their corp. master and special interest for ..... Money! These changes don't effect them. And no the Democrates didn't do any better. Tax and spend is all that either party can do. None are working toward better stewardship of the tax dollars and well being of the average citizens. Both parties pushes agenda that are not supported by the majority of NC citizens and yet use our tax dollars for these "projects".

  • wildervb Jun 6, 7:19 p.m.

For most of the last 100 years Democrats controlled this State, during that time the budget was balanced every year. Our State built one of the best State University systems in the country, our State became a magnet for innovators, jobs and business. Time and time again we were among the top States as far as being business friendly, Raleigh and Charlotte were often number one on the list of best places to live. We built the most extensive highway system (per citizen) in the US. Yeah, the Democrats sure messed things up!

Lets see what happens in the next 3 years as all the progress gets dismantled, as our education system slips, our Colleges are underfunded, our environment no longer protected. Some of the proposals put forth by our legislature have made us a laughing stock.

  • NoMoreOfThat Jun 6, 7:11 p.m.

All you whiners need to get over it. Your rates are going to be lowered to offset your slight services increase, you're still going to get to deduct your mortgage money, despite the NC Assoc of Realtor's lies with their latest hit piece, and in the end you're going to be just fine.

You might even be able to purchase some tissues for all that whining you're doing.

  • josephlawrence43 Jun 6, 7:10 p.m.

I just simply love it when the leftist/liberal/socialist crowd begins to holler about how abused everyone will be under the new tax bill. They conveniently forget how, for over 100 years, the Dims created new taxes, raised taxes and spent this state into the ground. We finally have a gov. and legislature willing to take the hard decisions and put them into place. Thank you.!!

  • Citizens Arrayest Jun 6, 7:07 p.m.

Now the illegal aliens and everyone making money under the table will have to chip in. This is like so totally wrong...and stuff.

  • Rebelyell55 Jun 6, 7:03 p.m.

Want to help the working-poor make them pick up their portion of the tab so they learn to demand smaller Government and lower taxes.

    whatelseisnew

June 6, 2013 6:33 p.m.......??? Wait, isn't that what most were voting for that got these clowns in office? Yet, they're so far working for bigger goverment, more taxes? (Yes those "fees" are still taxes). The problem is spending, and they're working on it, but not fast enough. In the meantime, as they do cut spending they're also raising taxes. They're not just targeting the poor working class, but senior citizens who've paid taxes for years and whose pockets, they've been pulling money out of. Last thing, is when ever the electric rates goes up, the sale taxes on that same bill goes up since it's tied to the cost, not usages. So that's why they approved the rate increase. They'll do it with insurance increase once it's taxed. More cost, more sales tax.

  • razor2 Jun 6, 6:44 p.m.

Taken in to account that people who are on set incomes barely

making it day to day this is going to throw us under the bus.

Its really makes me sad to see wealthy people catered too by

this governor and his cronies. There is very little respect for

the elderly or the sick pensioners who can't work and don't

or barely meet any criteria for any kind of assistance.

So the solution for them is too show false compassion and

act like they care but just can't do anything to help because

they are too busy helping themselves at our expense.

  • Plenty Coups Jun 6, 6:39 p.m.

Who needs public education and safe drinking water anyway? Let's cut the budget some more and tax my electric bill higher!

  • whatelseisnew Jun 6, 6:37 p.m.

NOPE, it was despicable for lefties to steal money from me to hand to someone else that did nothing to EARN that money. Perhaps you enjoyed being turned into a slave, I did not. the only thing I do not like about this bill is they should have eliminated income tax entirely. It is time for EVERYONE to PAY not just the hunted ones that the LEFTIES like to pick on so THEY do not have to pay.

  • whatelseisnew Jun 6, 6:34 p.m.

  • whatelseisnew Jun 6, 6:33 p.m.

"Want to help poor working people? Bring back the Earned Income Credit!!"

EITC is nothing more than direct THEFT. The working poor are not entitled to have the Government steal money from me to give to them. Want to help the working-poor make them pick up their portion of the tab so they learn to demand smaller Government and lower taxes.

  • whatelseisnew Jun 6, 6:32 p.m.

"Who cares about charitable deduction amounts?? Rich people, that's who! That's one of their favorite tax loopholes! More regressive policies that punish the poor and working classes. Want to help poor working people? Bring back the Earned Income Credit!!"

NO what is regressive is the current system. It encourages the beggar class to bang on the door for more handouts because they pay for little to none of it. Charitable deductions? Gee oddly enough I donate to CHARITY and I am not RICH. ALSO, the rich should be enticed to give a way money. That does far more good for the so-called poor than Government. I love how people here ignore the fact tax rates are being lowered and also want to pretend it is okay for the BULK of the population to PAY FOR NOTHING. It is typical selfish, greedy behavior. Don't tax me, tax somebody else. I wish they had gone all the way and completely eliminated the REGRESSIVE income tax that punishes people that achieve and rewards the beggar class.

  • peace2u Jun 6, 6:24 p.m.

dwntwnboy2 writes: "Yay! More taxes- thanks Repubs! Should make it easier to defeat you next election."

Well, someone has to pay the bill. The theory is that if we spend less, we can charge less. But some party that I won't mention by name likes to throw money at everything, making costs go up. So no one complains when one group is part of the problem, but everyone complains when the other group tries to put out the fire. It's got to end somewhere, folks. Write your state and national congress persons and tell them to stop pork barrels and eliminate programs that are not truly helpful or cost effective, where "truly helpful and cost effective" means programs that pay for themselves long-term through savings or investment in the American people.

They say that it shouldn't take a rocket scientist to figure this out, but instead we have politicians...

  • bowslinger70 Jun 6, 6:13 p.m.

GO republicans. Falling lock step and sending NC right in to a ditch. Let's do give Art Pope, and the C-level and upper management employees of Duke Power,Quintiles, Bayer Crop Science, Lenovo, SAS, Bank America, etc. a corporate and individual tax breaks. Is this because we have a huge surplus... is this because NC has a low unemployment rate, is this because our pre-K through 12 and community colleges are flush with cash while NC is 36th in SAT scores. Is this because the tuition of all UNC systems universities are up signficantly? Why? You are reducing the number of TAs in early grades, you are not creating an Obamacare Exchange (free money) or expanding Medicaid. Do you honestly think the likes of Art Pope and his billionaire and millionaire brethren need the extra cash? It has been historically proven that lowering personal income tax rates does NOT help the economy. Your actions will hurt the struggling middle class and drive more NC citizens into poverty! Pathetic!

  • geosol Jun 6, 6:00 p.m.

YAY!!! The biggest TAX INCREASE on the middle class in NC HISTORY, brought to you by the far right REPUBLICAN party legislature so that they can give even MORE tax breaks to their rich little friends who need it the least.

REMEMBER IN 2014 AND VOTE AGAINST ALL REPUBLICANS IN EVERY RACE!!

  • Citizens Arrayest Jun 6, 5:49 p.m.

Actually the clowns WERE just voted out. Whine on Democrats..whine on : )

  • mep Jun 6, 5:39 p.m.

Less taxes taken on income.... more in your take home pay... then how and what you spend your money on determines how much taxes you pay. Wealthy folks spend more on everything, and will in fact pay more in taxes. The poor will have more to spend. Pretty darn fair... if in fact you believe taking the same amount from everyone when they spend is fair.

For all you church goers.... God, the most FAIR being of all has mandated that each gives a tithe or ten percent of what they earn to support the poor and the church. Notice there is no taking more than ten percent from the wealthy... or less than ten percent from the poor.... equal amounts are equal in the eyes of God, regardless of income. Just saying.... heathens please ignore this part of the comment.

  • normson7 Jun 6, 5:26 p.m.

I thought republicans were anti tax so why are they creating new taxes?

  • NoMoreOfThat Jun 6, 5:08 p.m.

Stop listening to the false propaganda being peddled by the NC Assoc of Realtors. We will still be able to deduct our mortgage %. You may have to pay tax for a haircut, but your mortgage interest is safe. Unless you make a ton of money.

  • Vox-Populi Jun 6, 4:54 p.m.

Interesting move doubling the tax on electricity. Not like it isn't already expensive enough. Add in the requested rate increases and that fact that our current governor is closely aligned with Progress Energy and you get a recipe for disaster-- at least for power consumers.

  • wildervb Jun 6, 4:53 p.m.

This will cut taxes for high wage earners and raise taxes slightly for middle class and poorer citizens, it'll also amount to a tax increase for retirees, who will be paying more in sales taxes.

This will also continue the trend of cutting funds for education. Basically a shortsighted plan that rewards those who contribute the most to the GOP.

  • lec02572 Jun 6, 4:52 p.m.

I don't believen with the added tax on almost every type of service that the average citizen will be paying less tax. Less tax out of the pay check, "yes," but when you add all the new tax ("revenue") generated from services, movies, electricity bills (which are too high now) they will have a windfall of revenue ("tax") in their pockets. If you hear the word "revenue" replace it with the word "tax" they mean the same thing to government.

  • dwntwnboy2 Jun 6, 4:51 p.m.

Yay! More taxes- thanks Repubs! Should make it easier to defeat you next election.

  • 42 Jun 6, 4:44 p.m.

80% of NC enjoy your tax increase.

  • RadioDJ Jun 6, 4:40 p.m.

Like tax reforms should be their top priority while no one has a decent paying job to actually pay taxes with. But we're gonna make sure those rich benefactors keep gettin' richer. While all the poor Republicans keep getting deeper into debt and sucking up even more entitlements.
