I first I thought this arrest being in the news, for a little bit of pot, was a joke. Not anymore.

  • Boogalooboy Jun 7, 5:46 p.m.

boy, 5 buried this quickly in local news...

  • Boogalooboy Jun 7, 4:17 p.m.

Hello, hello... it's not about the pot anymore is it, he is innocent till proven guilty...now there is a weapon involved...now let's hear about the mistakes we make at a young age and it's ok... geez... get a brain folks.. hopefully it will be proven it wasn't his but it was in his vehicle...

  • Objective Scientist Jun 7, 2:12 p.m.

shakennotstirred - I agree 100% and have stated as such multiple times. I'd expand the "recruiting better people" to all college athletic programs. We MUST get away from the thinking that every kid coming out of high school - even with dismal academic credentials - who can block, tackle, throw, catch, shoot , rebound, jump, run, etc., etc., etc. better than most people has some inalienable "right" to play "college ball" so that they may have their "shot" at the NBA or NFL!!! Many such athletes coming out of high school with marginal or weak academic backgrounds would have great difficulty succeeding even if they did not play a sport and spend all the hours and energy practice and playing and even if they got the tutoring, etc. that they typically get. iMO - there absolutely MUST be an effort to make the "student" in student-athlete actually mean "STUDENT". And-- the idea that Universities should just field "semi-pro" teams with non-students is - frankly - sickening!

Maybe if UNC players actually went to class they wouldn't have time for things like this."

    At night....during the summer?

  • heels4life05 Jun 7, 2:07 p.m.

At least he didn't do what JJ Redick did and pull a U-Turn before the checkpoint...

  • tarheelforlife2 Jun 7, 2:03 p.m.

Okay I'm not defending PJ because he broke the law which is wrong... but you can't just be like "oh, he made a mistake at 20 years old? His life is over." No. Do you know how many mistakes you made at 20 years old? It didn't matter so much though for you because you werent a star player at a huge college. I'm not giving him a pass for this, but I honestly think everyone turning on him so quickly is sad.
And this whole "OMG unc students don't go to class." No stop. Get new jokes.
And just because one player makes a mistake, doesn't speak on the university as a WHOLE. UNC is still a wonderful school regardless. The actions of one individual does not affect how we should view the morality of nearly 30,000 students.

  • Sherlock Jun 7, 1:57 p.m.

Bet this does not go to the honor board and it will most likely just go away....

  • shakennotstirred Jun 7, 1:47 p.m.

UNC athletics have got to start recruiting better people. Regardless of how you feel about pot, gun control, driving without license etc., this kid was just asking to get busted. What has happened to the "high" standards UNC use to tout. Now it's "everybody else is doing it" and "don't the cops, NCAA, news media and DEA have better stuff to do" and "since we have been caught, they should change the laws". Pitiful excuses...

  • Steven Jun 7, 1:38 p.m.

Funny that UNC Wal-Mart fans have to go searching all the way back to 2010 for a story and say "but, but NCSU does it too!!!1!11!". How about owning up to your own sports department failures and quit trying to compare yourselves to others. Maybe if UNC players actually went to class they wouldn't have time for things like this.

" Just because it is a law doesn't make it right." - part of post by nctorwart

nctorwart - I absolutely 100% agree with your statement, and the examples you stated illustrate your point well and emphatically. My point was/is - who decides where the "line is drawn"? Who has the "right" to declare "It is only pot-- or whatever" and I don't agree with the law, therefore I will feel free to break the law. Would we not have "shades of anarchy" if everyone felt free to do that with whatever? In this instance the individual has been and is currently receiving something of great value from the University - a full scholarship to attend the University and many MANY additional benefits from being an athlete at the University. This individual may have the "right" to "break the law" as he sees fit... but the University also has the "right" to say to all who are provided such support by the University - if you break the law, even for a "good cause" you will lose that scholarship!

  • Common Sense Man Jun 7, 1:17 p.m.

"After you plead to misdmeanor pocession and a gun charge, take your slap on the wrist and go to the NBA.:

He hasn't been charged with a firearms offense. They didn't say it was stolen and it wasn't concealed.............

  • nctorwart Jun 7, 1:03 p.m.

Objective scientist: It is just pot. It is illegal, but it's like saying Ty Cobb should have been suspended for drinking alcohol durin prohibition. Pot is nowhere close to cocaine, heroin, crack. In fact Alcohol is worse for you than pot. You say that all should obey the law. By that logic we would still have segregation. Are you saying minorities should not use water fountains or sit at the back of the bus? It was illegal to marry Jews in Nazi Germany. Should that have been upheld? Just because it is a law doesn't make it right.

  • Hammerhead Jun 7, 12:55 p.m.

    "It's just pot"

    Driving without a license.
In the bad part of town.
    9mm handgun, ammunition.
Rented Silver GMC Yukon, NC license plate BKP7773

Looks like the cash keeps flowing to UNC-CHeat athletes.
    This is NOT football.

  • Boogalooboy Jun 7, 12:20 p.m.

whoops, 5 just announced they also found a gun in the car, testing for prints an DNA... more at 11

  • carolinagirl1976 Jun 7, 12:17 p.m.

WRAL just incorrectly reported that the gun was found INSIDE the car on the noon news! Way to go WRAL!! Can't get your 'facts' straight! HA!

  • bblack Jun 7, 11:47 a.m.

" Scholarships (also coaches contracts, but that's for another discussion) need to be rewritten. Being arrested should result in automatic suspension - at minimum. Being found/pleading guilty should result in LOSS OF SCHOLARSHIP - PERIOD!!! "

Would this apply to people on academic scholarships also?

  • Objective Scientist Jun 7, 11:27 a.m.

"...who cares it's just pot,..." This is a direct, verbatim quote from a recent post (not mine). What an attitude!!! Does it not matter at all that possessing/using pot is illegal in NC and in most other places in the USA? With what else would we end that sentence "Who cares, it's just ____"! Who decides that which is illegal is OK to have/do/use, etc., it is JUST ______? Where would our society be if that were the attitude of many and we had a lot of people doing illegal things simply because it "is just ____" and we disagreed with the law? Com'on folks... you don't agree with the marijuana laws... work to change them!!! But realize that as long as it is a law... it is incumbent upon all to "obey the law"!!! An attitude like "Who cares, it is just ____" is likely at least part of why this individual was arrested and may/should lose his scholarship!!!

  • jayb8408 Jun 7, 11:23 a.m.

"Found a gun outside of the car".. LOL.. Yea, guns just happen to be laying on the ground during traffic stops.. PJ, your done son.. After you plead to misdmeanor pocession and a gun charge, take your slap on the wrist and go to the NBA..

If this had not involved an intercollegiate basketball player - in particular a UNC-CH player - it would like have not even made the news. That said - I'm "sick" of this kind of "CR _ P" at UNC and in any university. Basketball and football players at NCAA D-I schools are treated like royalty. They are on full-ride scholarships at universities that are among the "elite" both athletically and academically. They are provided with the BEST of everything with virtually no concern for expense, etc., etc., etc. Yet... some - SOME - act like imbeciles!!! Scholarships (also coaches contracts, but that's for another discussion) need to be rewritten. Being arrested should result in automatic suspension - at minimum. Being found/pleading guilty should result in LOSS OF SCHOLARSHIP - PERIOD!!! In this case, the player/individual should have his scholarship revoked and wished well in the NBA! I'm not an ABCer, I hold 3 earned degrees from UNC and am very much a "TRUE BLUE" Tar Heel! But-- ENOUGH!!!

  • kikinc Jun 7, 10:29 a.m.

I don't care about the pot. The gun that was supposedly found? Well, that could be an issue.

  • littleriver69 Jun 7, 10:28 a.m.

Off the team. End of story.

  • dukefan101 Jun 7, 10:27 a.m.

Time to update with the fact that cops found a gun on the ground outside the car (which was apparently thrown from the car). Getting schooled on updates by WTVD!

  • cornbiz Jun 7, 10:06 a.m.

who cares it's just pot, NC State fans are just sad that when their players commit crimes it doesn't make national news bc who cares it's just Nc State

  • rayraynral Jun 7, 9:48 a.m.

It appears there was a speeding charge as well.

In Durham County, these citations are found for "HAIRSTON,SAMUEL,PETERSON,JR" (birthdate 12/24/1992 so this matches PJ's wiki page).

Misdemeanor POSSESS MARIJUANA UP TO 1/2 OZ
    Traffic NO OPERATORS LICENSE
    Infraction SPEEDING

How does one get caught SPEEDING at a traffic checkpoint. Was he trying to flee?

  • rayraynral Jun 7, 9:37 a.m.

"So Pack fans, remember when JR Sweezy and George Bryan were found to be actually "distributing" pot and there was lots of evidence of PEDs in the house. Funny how the charges got "thrown out"......... TOB's punishment? Suspended for the 1/2 of the WCU game. Hypocrites."

This is patently false. It was a misdemeanor simple possession. How typical for a CHeaterU supporter to try and rewrite history.

    http://www.opposingviews.com/i/nc-state-players-arrested-absurdity-of-marijuana-laws
When they applied, the marijuana laws, to state college, they were absurd. When they apply to Carolina the player should be kicked off the team. Right no ABCer logic there.

  • ncstateforever Jun 6, 7:42 p.m.
