If they have no kid in public school while working full time, none of them qualified.

Expertise in the field of education is precisely why a board separate from other government entities was created.

What? Maybe in your mind. The expertise in educating is the job of the school system employees, not the board. The board is to provide oversight and policy direction, based on the wishes of their constituients. They are there to keep the educators in touch with what the comminity wants.

And you have a problem with the police investigating itself but, you don't have a problem with the schoolboard overseeing itself?!!!

That's the angle I am coming from.

Is having people totally unfit to serve in board of education seats in the taxpayers best interest?

That's up to the voters in a given district as to who they think is fit. The board is a representation of the publics wishes as to how their schools are run.

By the way, non-democrats need not apply!!

  • stymieindurham Feb 25, 5:21 p.m.

And you have a problem with the police investigating itself but, you don't have a problem with the schoolboard overseeing itself?!!! I don't get that one.

"Having people from the education community oversee the education community is not in the taxpayers best interest." - btneast

Is having people totally unfit to serve in board of education seats in the taxpayers best interest? Do we really want another Goldman or Evans?

Maybe it is time for some adult supervision of the Wake County School Board provided by members with educational public service experience. While I may not agree with the 'political views' of some of the candidates, most of them have years of experience serving in the public educational sector in oversight positions. More importantly - all of them act like adults when serving the public.

The LAST thing we need is LIBERAL left-winger Linda Gunter. She is an education lobbyist. As much as I hate to say it, I'd take Bill Fletcher over her.

  • COLT45 Feb 25, 3:43 p.m.

Hopefully they will get someone who really cares about education and not getting thier name or picture in the paper on on TV.

"Having people from the education community oversee the education community is not in the taxpayers best interest. It's the fox watching the henhouse. "

You mean, like having Jim Womack chair the Fracking Board?

"The "board" should be made up from people from all walks of life."

Why? Expertise in the field of education is precisely why a board separate from other government entities was created. You might as well leave it to the partisan hacks in the County Commissioner's office, or the first 7 names in the phone book.

Well, the first 7 names, anyway.

  • NiceNSmooth Feb 25, 3:26 p.m.

Is her 'seat' available? Seems like it was available in the past!

only if you were a fellow board member

  • btneast Feb 25, 3:17 p.m.

Linda, Lois, Bill and some of the others are well-known names in the education community.

Having people from the education community oversee the education community is not in the taxpayers best interest. It's the fox watching the henhouse. The "board" should be made up from people from all walks of life. They provide oversight and make financial and policy decisions based on the wishes of their constituients. They are there to keep the "educators" honest, so to speak.

  • iron fist Feb 25, 3:13 p.m.

Who want want to be a member of the Wake county school board?

  • Dadof4girls Feb 25, 3:06 p.m.

Is her 'seat' available? Seems like it was available in the past!

  • more cowbell Feb 25, 2:50 p.m.

Good deal, seven more celebrity politician wanna-be's! Who in their right mind would want to get in the middle of that "charlie fox-trot?"

  • Karmageddon Feb 25, 2:43 p.m.

Goldman's seat was vacant while she was in it.......

  • westernwake1 Feb 25, 2:37 p.m.

Linda, Lois, Bill and some of the others are well-known names in the education community. I expect many of them could do an excellent job if appointed --- certainly a better job than Goldman.

It is good to see a solid turnout of qualified candidates.

  • 4Strikes Feb 25, 2:35 p.m.

Why would anyone in their right mind want to join that band of misfits.

  • bombayrunner Feb 25, 2:28 p.m.

Hope is its another level headed person like Goldman. Appreciate her service on the board as she was a pretty selfless worker.

  • mille045 Feb 25, 2:13 p.m.

How many are from New Jersey, are looking for abuse from the co. comm., thick skinned, change everything every 6-8 months and hurl insults to anyone at the table without pause?

  • dwntwnboy2 Feb 25, 2:12 p.m.

Does the position come with a side of crazy or do the potential candidates have to fill in that part by themselves?

  • baldchip Feb 25, 2:06 p.m.

Sure glad I live in JoCO where we have common sense folks on our School Board and Commissioners!! They had best get along or they will be replaced!!

  • computer trainer Feb 25, 2:02 p.m.

FourAutumn - you will have no say-so in the decision, unless you are buds with the present board chairman.

  • FourAutumn Feb 25, 1:39 p.m.

Is that the same Bill Fletcher who contested election results for nearly half a year because he lost?

    The same one?

    No thanks.

  • corey3rd2 Feb 25, 1:36 p.m.

Debra Goldman did not resign her post. She disqualified herself from holding the position when she filed to vote in Wilkes County. Doesn't matter what she emailed to the board a week later, she was no longer fit to hold the position because you must be Wake county resident and she wasn't.
